Gulf Aid Fundraiser

Atlanta’s Pacci Ristorante announced today that it would be joining the relief efforts in the wake of the devastation caused by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill with its “We Cook While They Clean” fundraiser.

Beginning Wednesday, June 23, $1 from every seafood dish on the Pacci lunch and dinner menu will be donated to the Gulf Relief Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to providing relief to the fishing community of the Gulf Coast and their families. For more information on the Gulf Relief Foundation visit www.gulfaid.org.

“We Cook While They Clean” will continue until fishermen are back in their boats. Seafood dishes at Pacci include calamari with spicy aioli; mussels and clams in anisette cream with heirloom cherry tomatoes; halibut with roasted alba mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, grilled corn and corn butter; and sea scallops with wild mushroom risotto and sweet pea nage. Pacci has been a leader in the Atlanta community with its commitment to sustainable fishing practices and its relationship with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch, which certifies seafood suppliers from sustainable fishing environments and provides a unified message concerning the conservation of ocean resources through sensible seafood choices.

“We wanted to support those who have been most affected and displaced by this oil spill, especially those fishermen who we rely on everyday in our restaurants,” said Executive Chef Keira Moritz. “We are coming together and making an honest commitment to these fishermen,” she adds.

Ray’s Killer Creek, Alpharetta, Atlanta, GA Restaurant Review

Ray’s Killer Creek Restaurant located in Alpharetta, is part of the Ray’s Restaurant group which also includes Ray’s In The City and the flagship restaurant Ray’s on the River. It had been about 10 years since I’d eaten at Ray’s Killer Creek. So, when I was invited to check Killer Creek out, I was more than happy to oblige.

Killer Creek is located off Mansell Road near North Point Mall and there is overkill in the amount of chain restaurants that abound in this vicinity. So, it is a welcome change that Ray’s Killer Creek sets itself above the rest. Having said that, prices are a bit above other restaurants in the area. And servers are decked out in jackets and ties. Business casual dress code is noted on Killer Creek’s website, but I saw many patrons who ignored that request. Killer Creek even has it’s own wine cellar. See pic below.

I could have done without the valet. Come on, this is Alpharetta guys, not Buckhead, but whatever. Walking inside the freestanding restaurant, I immediately noticed just how big the restaurant is. The bar area is rather large, even equipped with live entertainment. And the dining area is ginormous too. As I looked around I could see mostly couples and families who seemed to celebrating special occasions. There was also a wedding reception going on outside.

This is a steakhouse and as such, you definitely need to bring your appetite. But, don’t completely skip the bread. Killer Creek offers a nice selection: sourdough, raisin and the cracker variety. I couldn’t resist 2 pieces of the sweet (but not too sweet) raisin bread.

Moving on to appetizers, I was dead set on steak for dinner so chose, seafood for appetizers: the Crab Cake and Ahi Tuna. The Crab Cake was full of lump crab meat and what I’d expect at a restaurant of this caliber. The Ahi Tuna was another good appetizer choice with the dark pink center in contrast to it’s pepper crust, making a pretty presentation as well as a tasty one. Both were $14 each.

We also opted to split a salad, choosing Rays Chop-Chop salad made with hearts of palm, eggs, olives and of chickpeas . I know that salads are very large so we split it. Our server was kind enough to accommodate our requests for different dressings on each half. Truth be told, I thought the salad was ok, but if I had to do it again, I’d forgo the salad to save more room for my steak.

In the past, my preferred cut of steak was always a filet. I found them to be tender, flavorful and just the right size (usually an 8 oz portion) for me. But over the last year or so, I’ve lost the taste of filets in favor of the more flavorful Ribeye. It is just too bad ribeyes tend to come in such large portions. For steaks, we chose the New York Strip and the Ribeye which was a special that evening. This was a 20 oz Ribeye served with a side for $40. Note that there is still a great selection of seafood offered including shrimp, scallops, salmon, and a couple other selections.

Our steaks were prepared medium, just as requested. Had I just tasted my New York Strip, I would have been quite pleased . But we just couldn’t help but share. And the ribeye far exceeds the strip when it comes to flavor. I think it’s my new cut of choice. And, hey, if two of you both like ribeyes but don’t have a big appetite, they are perfect for sharing.

We tried two of the desserts at Killer Creek as well: cheesecake and the peanut brittle-like shell with ice cream in the middle. The cheesecake was spot on – as good as any cheesecake I can remember having, but the peanut-brittle-ice-cream-thingy dessert was amazing. I really only expected to have a little taste of it as I was pretty stuffed, but we mopped that sucker up in a hurry.

Buckhead Life Restaurant Group: $25 for 25 Days Promotion

I think that one the hardest hit industries in these economic times is the restaurant industry. Prices are going up for EVERYTHING, but consumers are cutting back on spending, especially anything that isn’t a necessity. So, restaurants are hit with a double whammy: they must pay more for food, but patrons are dining out less and less. I’ve noticed that more restaurants are offering specials and I definitely get more BOGO free coupons for restaurants than I ever have before. Even the fancier, 5 star restaurants are not immune this.

The Buckhead Life Restaurant Group is having restaurant week promotion of sorts. The promotion is known as $25 for 25 days. It began May 6th and runs through May 31st. Each Buckhead Life Restaurant Group will be offering a 3 course farm to table meal for $25.

This is a great opportunity to try some 5 star dining without paying the 5 star price. They offer 3 course meals, all priced at $25. Each restaurant has 3 menus, changing from one week to the next. After looking at all the menus many do not change that much from week 1 to week 3.

To see full menus follow this link:
$25 for 25 Days

My top 3 choices after reviewing the menus: VENI VIDI VICI, Atlanta Fish Market, Pricci, – in that order. Veni Vidi, Vici for the Shrimp and Calamari appetizer, the Pork Milanese entree, and the Four Cheese Cheesecake for dessert, Atlanta Fish Market for the Blackened Mahi Mahi, and Pricci for the Pork Scallopine. Enjoy!

Aqua Blue, Roswell, Atlanta, Ga Restaurant Review

Do you remember the old John Harvard’s Brewhouse from years ago? It closed down long before there were ever Bloggers, Yelp or or Urbanspoon. But what it’s turned into is a great Seafood restaurant known as Aqua Blue. Stepping inside the suburban (Roswell, GA) Aqua Blue, you would never know that this was once a Pub.

It’s sleek, modern interior could fool you into thinking you were in an upscale Buckhead or Midtown restaurant. There are four distinct areas throughout the restaurant, each very well appointed. As you walk inside, there is a curtained off room to the right of the hostess stand for private parties. Behind the hostess stand is a large bar area with plenty of hightops (see pic below), and as beautiful as it is, you could enjoy your entire meal there.

But the main dining area is pretty snazzy itself (see pic above right), with white booths and nicely appointed light fixtures, it is a great choice for an intimate date night. Lastly, the outdoor patio beckons you on warm spring evenings or cool fall nights, which is where I chose to sit on my recent visit to Aqua Blue.

Aqua Blue invited me for a visit, so, in full disclosure, this was a free meal. After being seated on the patio on a gorgeous spring evening, our server, Elbie came over to introduce himself and give us his recommendations. He’s got to be one of the coolest, friendliest, most knowledgeable servers I’ve encountered in quite sometime. If you visit, ask for him, you won’t be sorry.

To start, we each ordered a cocktail – one Pommegranite Martini and a Georgia Peach tea concoction. They were ok, but didn’t get me too excited. Skip the cocktails and head straight for the wine list here. They have a great selection and Elbie really steered us in the right direction.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. First let’s talk about the bread. The crispy wafer bread tastes like a pretzel albeit with minimal salt. I enjoyed this, but only had a couple pieces, not wanting to fill up before the real goodies arrive. Also included are two other varieties of rolls – one rye and the other a cornbread-esque type. You’ll be served butter, but you won’t need it. The rolls are soft and moist already.

As far as appetizers at Aqua Blue, the menu is very seafood heavy with a couple vegetable options like Edamame (soybeans), Tempura Green Beans and an Olive Tasting. I’d read good things prior to visiting and knew the Tempura Green Beans and Calamari were signature items, so we ordered those as well as the Crab Cake.

Elbie told us that while it isn’t listed on the menu you can do a half and half order of Calamari and Green Beans if you like. I would definitely go this route if there are only 2 of you, as the half portions are pretty substantial and quite filling. Aqua Blue also has a Riesling (Eroica Columbia Valley ’08) that pairs very well with the calamari. I am not normally a fan of Riesling, or white wine in general for that matter, but this tasted more like a Chardonnay sans the oak flavor.

The crab cake was superb with any bread or filler being undetectable. All I tasted was lump crab. It is almost a waste of the peppers and jicama mix that comes with it as I’m sure much of that goes uneaten. I sampled a bit and although it was tasty, I didn’t want to fill up on veggies. I have to mention that while I did love the crab cake, at $15, you’ll get more bang for your buck sticking with some of the other apps.

The calamari was quite delicious too, with a sweet and spicy sauce mixed in, although I feel it may have been a tad too sauce heavy. But most surprising to me were the Tempura Green Beans. The light batter and crunchiness of the tempura was a perfect match for the beans. And the sweet mustard sauce for dipping made for the perfect bite. And the salt portion was just right – not overkill like in so many restaurants.

I noticed two out of the four tables around us chowing down on huge lobsters. I assumed it was a special that evening as I didn’t see them on the menu. But when I inquired with Elbie, he told me it is a birthday special that Aqua Blue offers to those on their mailing list. Here’s the deal: sign up to be on their mailing list and you get a 2.5 lb lobster FOR FREE on your BirthMONTH. Ahuh, that’s right- Your whole BirthMONTH, not on your birthDAY. What a deal – Sign me Up!

So, I was jonesing for some Chilean Sea Bass as it had been far too long since I’ve had any. I knew that would be one of our entree selections and I couldn’t help but ask if by any chance they had one last lobster left for us. We were in luck, they did!

Aqua Blue has some of the best Sea Bass I’ve ever had. The slightly crunchy outside texture gives way to the sweet, buttery inside and it almost melts in your mouth. You gotta try this dish. As for the lobster, I would have never ordered it had I not known that they cut most of the shell for you, allowing for easy access to the lobster meat. And how plentiful the lobster meat was by the way. Why, oh why, didn’t I ask for a bibb? Of course I spilled some melted butter on my shirt. Oh well, it is a small price to pay for eating well, I suppose.

As we had made complete gluttons of ourselves, you would think we stopped there, wouldn’t you? Nope. We opted for dessert too. The coconut cake caught my eye and I looked no further. We also tried the sherry and fig ice cream but found the name to be more intriguing that the taste. The coconut cake more than made up for the ice cream though. It was moist and creamy – just perfect for two to share.

Fish2Fork Rates Best, Worst Restaurants for Sustainable Seafood

When you cook for yourself you can easily identify which seafood product has been wildly caught (sustainable) and which hasn’t. But what about when you eat out? Not so easy to identify which seafood comes from a sustainable environment.

Thanks to a new website, Fish2fork.com, you can now find figure out which of the seafood you order is sustainable. The website has a rating system that rates a restaurant on its performance of serving sustainable fish.

In addition to educating consumers about the pollution of our waters, Fish2Fork also wants to make known the problem of overfishing which leads to more types of fish that become endangered. And for most consumers, these problems are out of sight, which means out of mind.

Most restaurants give little or no information on the source of their fish, which aids in diners being disconnected from their food. For example, if you knew that the fish special you just ordered was near the last of it’s species, you’d probably think twice about ordering it. Fish2Fork is hoping that consumers with this knowledge will make better choices, helping to protect fish and other sea life.

When rating restaurants, Fish2Fork takes into account several factors when determining a restaurant’s score.

  • They see if the seafood served is endangered an species list and/or the “fish to avoid” list.
  • They also rate restaurants on providing the information of where the fish or shellfish came from. E.g. is it farmed, wild, line caught etc..
  • Customers also have the ability to “rat on a restaurant,” or praise a restaurant they like.

If you want to eat only sustainable seafood, check out Fish2Fork’s website. They have a growing database of restaurants that you can search.
