Studio Movie Grill, Roswell, Atlanta, GA Review

Similar to the old Buckhead Backlot theatre, Studio Movie Grill combines the dinner and show concept. Studio Movie Grill opened in the Alpharetta / Roswell area this past June. Studio Movie Grill is great for Roswellites, only about 3 miles down Holcomb Bridge Rd from 400. Unfortunately for me, I missed the opportunity to attend their media event as I was out of town, but Studio Movie Grill invited me back to see a flick and sample their goods on a recent Sunday afternoon. Full disclosure: I was comped the movie tickets and meal as part of my review.

Man it is hot in Atlanta in August! And what a better way to spend an absolutely scorching Sunday afternoon than in a cool theatre, sipping on an ice cold Margarita? They have lots of cocktails at Studio Movie Grill and of course, beer and wine are available too. When you enter Studio Movie Grill, just beyond the ticketing area, you’ll see a bar to your left. It seemed odd to me that people would be hanging out in a bar at a movie theatre in the middle of the afternoon, but there were several patrons doing just that.

We chose to see the new Angelina Jolie flick, Salt. Totally unbelievable but certainly entertaining. But I digress. You have a choice of buying tickets in advance or purchasing them at the theatre box office. Prices are just under $10 after 6pm and only $8 before 6pm ANY day, not just weekdays.

If you are going on weekend night or seeing a recent release, I would suggest getting tickets in advance. As the theatres have tables / bars for eating, you can imagine this takes up some real estate, allowing for less seating. Studio Movie Grill also offers reserved seating. This requires that you pre-purchase a movie ticket and a $12 dining credit. If you go this route, you’ll be prompted to select your seats during the purchase process.

We decided to wait until we were seated before ordering drinks or food. There’s a button on each table you press to alert servers that you want to place an order. They’ll come around and enter in your order on their nifty hand held device. And don’t worry, they’ll drop your check off plenty of time before the movie is over, so you don’t have to sit there waiting on it or change.

Starting the movie experience off with a margarita, choices were a regular for $8.50 or large for $9.50. It’s a no brainer to order the large. For starters, we chose the Tabasco wings and Thai salad with mint dressing. I thought the wings were tasty and meaty, albeit a little expensive at $8.50 for 5 wings. The salad was a large portion and very fresh.

Although the starters at Studio Movie Grill were enjoyable, I highly recommend the Megaplex burger. With bacon, mushrooms, onions and both cheddar and pepper jack cheese, it was juicy and tasty. Even the dark theatre, I didn’t have to see the cheese to tell it was quality. I was kinda bummed that I was slightly full by the time my burger arrived. It is pretty large and the burger, along with my crispy sweet potato fries would have been plenty by itself to fill me up and keep me satisfied for the remainder of the night.

While it may not be a destination for ITPers, it’s something out of the ordinary for North Fulton / Johns Creek dwellers. Oh, and unbeknownst to Studio Movie Grill, I also visited once before this visit, and was treated with the same friendly service on both occasions.

Uncle Julio’s Mexican Restaurant, Sandy Springs, Atlanta, GA

Last month, Uncle Julio’s Mexican Restaurant opened its second location in Atlanta. The new location in Sandy Springs, is at the intersection of Hammond and Peachtree-Dunwoody Rd, I was invited to sample some of the cuisine at the Media event.

Uncle Julio\'s Patio

Uncle Julio's Patio

Luckily, the weather was absolutely perfect on this Monday afternoon, sunny and in the 70s. As we entered Uncle Julio’s we immediately noticed the attention to detail. This is truly a beautiful space. In speaking to a couple of the marketing staff that were in town for the opening, I found out that they actually import some of the stone pieces from Mexico.

Uncle Julio\'s Mojito

Uncle Julio's Mojito

First stop was of course the bar. I first opted for a margarita on the rocks, although the signature Swirl Margarita did look quite temping. The margarita was quite tasty and didn’t skimp on the alcohol, but I wanted to see how their Mojito was. And, it blew me away. I’m not usually a fan of Mojitos, as they tend to be too sweet for me, but this one had just the right balance of sweet flavoring and alcohol.

Uncle Julio\'s Fresh, Soft Torillas

Uncle Julio's Fresh, Soft Torillas

Drink in hand, we were escorted on a tour of the 2-story restaurant. Beginning with the kitchen, we passed by their tortilla machine, which was churning out warm, soft tortillas, which we nibbled on as we walked around. I haven’t toured many kitchens, and I know the restaurant is new, but this has got to be one of the cleanest kitchens I’ve ever seen. Peering inside the fridge, we noted all produce is dated. And I found out Uncle Julio’s even has it’s own butcher on site.

After the brief tour, it was time to sample some of the cuisine. What mexican meal wouldn’t start without chips and salsa? I loved the smokey flavor of the salsa here. The guacamole was very fresh tasting too. For appetizers we were treated to veggie (mushrooms, peppers and onions) quesadillas as well as tamales. While I thought the tamales were somewhat bland, the quesadillas were extremely flavorful, definitely a vegetarian entree that could be thoroughly enjoyed by a non-vegetarian.

Uncle Julio\'s Shrimp, Fajitas, and Pork Ribs

Next we were on to the main entrees. We sampled the Plato Gordo, which a sampling of the 3 most popular menu items: chicken and beef fajitas, camarones brochette, and costillas. The fajitas were delicious. The camarones brochette (shrimp stuffed with cheese and jalapenos then wrapped with bacon) were probably my favorites – fresh, spicy, what’s not to like? The Costillas which are ribs were equally as tasty.

Uncle Julio\'s Desserts - Cajeta, Flan, Sopasillas

But we weren’t done yet – we still had dessert. Of course we sampled the flan, a traditional mexican dessert and it was done just right. And the Sopapillas, puffed pastries served with honey for dipping were definitely tasty and a great option if you have a large group and want to share. But the most exceptional was the Cajeta – vanilla ice cream with toasted coconut and pecans, topped with caramel sauce. Think of it like mexican fried ice cream with a twist.

Por Fin Mexican Restaurant, Johns Creek, Atlanta, GA Restaurant Review

Por Fin, which means “At Last” is a new upscale Mexican restaurant which opened earlier this month, is in the up and coming Johns Creek, GA area. Por Fin reached out to me and asked me to check them out, which I gladly did this past Saturday evening.

Glen chose the Authentic Margarita, made with Agave Tequila, and was very pleased with it himself. And, if you are really into Tequila, Por Fin also offers what they call a “Make it my Way Margarita.” It comes with your choice of tequila (choose from 15 high end tequilas) for only $10. This is unique idea – one I’ve not seen anywhere else in Atlanta.

I was in the mood for Tequila. So, I sampled the Nancy Rita – a concoction which, Nancy Pingitore, Por Fin’s owner came up with herself which consists of (in addition to tequila) berries, Orange Liqueur, lime juice and soda. A depature from the typical margarita, but a drink I enjoyed it quite well.

Beer is available by the bottle only, but at reasonable prices. I was glad to see a good offering – Sierra Nevada, Sweetwater 420 and Yuengling are all $3.50 or under and for a bit more you can get Stella, Red Stripe or St. Paulie Girl. I also like that the wine selections are all available by the glass or bottle.

Por Fin Ceviche

Por Fin Ceviche

To start, I ordered the guacamole, ceviche and mussels appetizer. While the guacamole was fresh tasting, I think it could have used a little more salt. I did enjoy the ceviche, consisting of shrimp, scallops and calamari, and it is a huge portion! It is more than I’ve ever had in a serving of ceviche, and would be great to share with a group of 4 or more. Por Fin has 2 kinds of ceviche (the other being a salmon) and you can get a duo of them if you’d like to try both for just a couple bucks more.

Por Fin Mussels

Por Fin Mussels

The mussels were also another winner that evening. I loved the broth which has a touch of cream but also is made with tequila. It is pretty spicy – just what I wanted and with lots of crusty bread for dipping. Normally, I would have skipped the soup, but the chicken and garabanzo bean soup just sounded too good, so I sampled that as well. At only $3.95 it is a large bowl, very filling and healthy. This is a great choice and one of the best dishes I tasted. When you visit, please don’t miss this one.

Por Fin offers tacos, tamales, enchiladas and burritos, but we wanted to sample some of their “creative plates” And just as a side note, you can mix and match tacos (i.e. one shrimp, one steak, one chicken) many of which come with what is called “metamorphosis salsa,” a salsa mixed with blueberries and mangoes with a bit of heat to it. They also offer “wet burritos” which are stuffed with all the regular fixings inside – rice, beans, queso and salsa, the only difference is that in these burritos the meat sits on top.

Whenever I am fortunate enough to meet with the proprietors of restaurants, I always ask for their opinion on what to try. So, after taking Nancy’s advice on starters, and being pleased I once again asked for recommendation on dinner.

Por Fin Short Ribs

Por Fin Short Ribs

She touted the Marjoram and tomato braised beef Short Ribs and the fish of which there were 2 kinds – a blue corn crusted Grouper and Yucatan style wrapped in a corn husk. Glen ordered the Yucatan fish (Corvina that evening).

My short ribs were tasty and had a sweet with heat twinge to them. I did combine some meat with the charro beans and cilantro rice in the flour tortilla, which I quite enjoyed. Glen enjoyed his Corvina fish as well, which was light and flavored with an adobo sauce.

I really love the fresh taste of everything. Nancy said she deliberately planned the menu around more traditional Mexican food rather than offering a bunch of dishes smothered in cheese. The decor was thoughtfully planned as well with burlap and silk curtains, stamped floor and bar made of high polished sandstone. And, while everything was high in quality, it wasn’t high in price. Appetizers were under $10 and all entrees were under $20.
