Trilogy Trolley Crawl, Roswell, Atlanta, GA

The second annual Trilogy Trolley Crawl happens Saturday, August 21, 2010 from 7:00-11:30pm. The Trolley Crawl takes guests on a journey to three different venues, each with the theme of an American city. The three cities represented are Las Vegas, Nashville, and New York City. Travel via trolley to all three historic homes for food, drink, fun and entertainment. Limited number of tickets available at $40. It’s definitely something a little bit out of the ordinary.

The ticket price includes admission to three historic Roswell homes, one drink ticket and three mini-sampler plate food tickets. The event will take place on the grounds of Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall and Smith Plantation. Trolleys transport guests to the three great American “cities” mentioned above where they can feast on regional cuisine and signature drinks.

What: Trilogy Trolley Crawl
When: Saturday, August 21, 2010
Where: Historic Roswell
Cost: $40 per person
Why: A chance to see a Historic building while drinking, dancing and eating

The grounds of Barrington Hall are filled with the excitement, sites and sounds of the Las Vegas strip. You’ll be able to “gamble” at the casino while listening to the Vegas sounds of Brookwood Split. Enjoy a taste of Vegas with a “Caesar Salad” with Chicken Strips and a slice of Wedding Chapel Cake. And wash that down with our Signature Drink, the “Rat Pac” (classic vodka & tonic).

Bulloch Hall will take you to Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry and will feature all of the fun that country and western music has to offer. You can two-step to the terrific country sounds of the award winning Jamie Pelfrey Band. Enjoy a BBQ Pork Slider with Tennessee Slaw and a Mini Moon Pie. And what else would the Signature Drink be but some good old Lynchburg Lemonade (Jack Daniels and lemonade)?

Smith Plantation will transform into the streets of New York City with iconic music and foods found throughout the Big Apple. Rock the night away at our “Studio 54” with famous local DJ Steve the Extreme. A mini Pastrami on Rye with Chips and a NYC Black & White Cookie will delight your palate. And, our “Cosmo” Signature Drink will add another special touch to the evening.

Six trolleys will continuously loop to transport guests from site to site. Parking is available at each site with additional parking at the First Baptist Church parking lot on Mimosa Boulevard. Guests may begin the fun at any of the three locations.

Atlanta Streets Alive

Imagine a street full of people of all ages and backgrounds, walking, biking, creating and laughing, together. A street temporarily closed to cars, but open to people. Something like this:

Imagine residents safely enjoying their city, socializing with neighbors, and engaging in healthy activities. Imagine if all of this were free, with absolutely no barriers to participation. By the people, for the people. Sound good yet?

On May 23rd from 1-6PM, we are turning this dream into a reality by organizing the first-ever Atlanta Streets Alive. This event will take a valuable public space – our city’s streets – and open them up for people to play, walk, bike, breathe, and make their own.

Modeled on tremendously successful events from around the world, including Bogotá, Colombia’s Ciclovia; Paris, France’s Paris Plage; and San Francisco’s Sunday’s Streets, the event will be part bike tour, part block party, and a great time for getting active, supporting local businesses along the route, people watching, and enjoying our amazing city!

Marietta Greek Festival, Marietta, GA

If you look forward to the Atlanta Greek Festival every year, the good news is you can now enjoy two Greek Festivals every year. Of course there’s the huge Greek Festival that takes place in September in Decatur. But if you live in or close to Cobb County, you should definitely check out the Marietta Greek Festival which is located in East Cobb.

Truth be told, my expectations were low. I hadn’t heard about the Marietta Greek festival as very little advertising was done. And I just stumbled upon it driving around. From what I could see from the outside, there wasn’t much going on at the Marietta Greek Festival. But, I thought that it was a nice day to be outside walking around so, I would check it out.

Once inside, I couldn’t help getting some of their yummy Greek morsels. It was a lot of food and very reasonably priced. The church tour was interesting – not boring at all as I suspected it might be. I loved the dancers and if nothing else was astounded by the Greek Colesseum they have on the grounds.

The Food
The food was pretty tasty at the Marietta Greek Festival last year. I sampled the chicken and pork kabobs. The chicken was white meat and marinated in olive oil and other spices which I enjoyed pretty well. But the kabobs were way better, they had much more flavor and were a bigger hit than the lamb at the festival. All the dishes come with rice and spanakopita (pastry stuffed with cheese and spinach).

Save room for dessert as there are so many goodies at the Marietta Greek Festival to sample. I tried to Baklava, which was excellent, but there are lots of other tasty treats like special cookies and pastries to enjoy as well. They have greek wine, but it was not pleasing in any way. I would skip that and just enjoy a soft drink.

The Entertainment

Greek Dancers

Greek Dancers

I was amazed at the entertainment. I really wasn’t expecting much, but it was actually quite enjoyable. In addition to Greek bands which perform, there are also dancers. They vary in age from quite young at the kindergarten level to young adults. Don’t worry about seating as there is actually a Greek colosseum in the ground of the church that allows for great views of the dancers. This in itself is pretty spectacular to see.

Church Tours

Marietta Greek Orthodox Church

Marietta Greek Orthodox Church

The Church Tours of the Orthodox church take place during all three days of the festival. I took the tour last year and was really glad I did (and not only because it got me out of the heat for a while). A guided instructor takes small groups of no more than about 20 people through the church and gives them a brief history and some information about the Greek Orthodox Church.

It is great to get inside and to see their beautiful, rich designs and learn about their history at the same time. It was intriguing and at only 20 – 30 minutes short enough to prevent me from getting bored as I tend to do quite easily with these things.

Extras:
If you have kids under the age of 12, stop by on Friday evening (May 14th) for free food. From 3 to 6 PM kids under the age of 12 eat for free.

I won’t be able to visit Taste of Alpharetta this year, but I did last year and here’s a recap of my experience. My best advice is get there early. Parking was a mess last year and many vendors are biting at the bit to pack it up as soon as they can. So, if you want the best food selection you’ll need to get there early. Las Palmas

Las Palmas is about 2 miles from my house, so needless to say, I frequent it alot. Their frozen margaritas are fantastic. I never order less than a pitcher (not by myself, course). So, if you are in the Kennesaw area on Cinco de Mayo and don’t want to deal with the hassle of Barrett Parkway, drive up to Las Palmas. It’s in the LA Fitness shopping center.

The Atlanta Street Food Coalition Presents The Urban Picnic

Atlanta’s Aspiring Gourmet Street Food Cart Vendors will be Open for Business during Lunch Hour at Sweet Auburn Curb Market. The Urban Picnic gives citizens of Atlanta a rare opportunity to sample and experience street food from over a dozen of Atlanta’s aspiring gourmet street food cart vendors. Sweet Auburn Curb Market is located at 209 Edgewood Ave SE Atlanta, GA 30303. This takes place on Friday, April 30, from 11 AM to 2 PM.

The coalition hopes monthly events help bring the public’s attention to the fact that street food is non-existent in Atlanta because of our State’s old-fashioned and outdated health rules and regulations. Atlanta Street Food Coalition’s ultimate goal is to lobby for and see implemented a regulatory system that allows food trucks to operate in Atlanta, bringing healthy food options to areas of the city that are dominated by convenience stores and creating new and exciting businesses in previously undeveloped and underserviced areas.

The Curb Market spills onto the sidewalks for the return of the Atlanta Urban Picnic! Atlanta’s up-and-coming independent food artisans bring their carts and tables and join the Curb Market’s nine restaurants for an outdoor festival showcasing healthy, gourmet lunch foods. Fast food doesn’t have to be bad food – taste how good casual downtown food-on-the-go can be. Bring your appetite; blanket optional.

Vendors Include:
Artichoke Bliss
Black Tie Barbecue
Good Food Truck
The Pickle
Souper Jenny
Hankook Taqueria

Friday, 4/30 11am – 2pm
