La Tavola, Virginia Highland, Atlanta, GA Restaurant Review

A couple weeks back, La Tavola Trattoria, part of the Fifth Group Restaurants, had a BOGOF promotion. Never having sampled La Tavola before, I thought this would be a great opportunity to give it a try. So now, my Fifth Group Restaurant experience is complete; I’ve dined at them all – South City Kitchen, Ecco, The Original El Taco and now La Tavola.

We pulled up on a rainy Friday night and there was an open spot right in front of La Tavola. After snagging that primo spot I just knew it was going to be a good evening. We were a couple minutes late for our 8:30 reservation and as the place was absolutely packed, I feared that they might have given our reservation away to punctual diners. But our good fortune prevailed and the host assured us we’d be seated shortly.

As I surveyed the tiny dining room, I was so glad I had made reservations. But it got even better. They escorted us to the outdoor dining area that shares space with Noche. They obviously had the heaters going and the plastic covers to keep out the cold. I liked this even better than the interior as it is much more conducive to talking than the inside dining area with it’s open kitchen.

I started with their Il Fiore, (Mojito made with Gin instead of Vodka). I liked it ok, but at $12, would have preferred to put the $ toward an entire bottle of red wine and skip the specialty cocktails altogether.

Nothing grabbed my attention on the appetizer menu, but Glen chose the Farro soup which is a soup made with barley, pancetta, leeks and butternut squash. I had a taste and loved it. It was perfect for warming me up on that cold, rainy night. I usually hate leeks but didn’t even taste them in the soup.

La Tavola Rabbit Sausage Stuffed Pasta Tubes

For our entrees, I chose the Pennoni with Rabbit. This is tubes of pasta stuffed with rabbit sausage. It comes with a Swiss Chard Bechamel (bechamel is made from milk, butter and flour) sauce. I quite enjoyed the meal and really liked the bitterness of the swiss chard paired with the slightly sweet pasta and cherry tomatoes.

Glen had ordered the Fish special that night, but his order was confused with the regular trout entree which he got instead. He ate it and didn’t complain, but it’s too bad, because the special sounded spectacular. The presentation of both dishes was beautiful. I would love to see what items like the Pork Porterhouse or the Smoked Risotto with Boar Sausage look like.

La Tavola Trout

I liked our server up until our entrees were delivered. He was friendly and seemed to know the menu inside and out. But we saw less sand less of him as our evening wore on. I really wanted a glass of wine with my meal, but I was halfway through my meal before I was able to get it.

The Dolcetto I got was a good compliment to my rabbit pasta and one of 14 reds by the glass. I counted 9 whites by the glass. It seemed to open up more as I let it sit there. La Tavola definitely has a good wine list and lends itself to the type of place you’d want to go and share a bottle with someone.

For dessert we shared the cheesescake with blueberry sauce and candied lemon zest. It was absolutely delightful – light but very flavorful.

La Tavola Cheesecake

Although service was less than attentive, I enjoyed our leisurely dinner and definitely recommend La Tavola Trattoria as a date night option. Just ask to be seated on the patio. Although it overlooks the parking lot, I still think it is more romantic than the noisy dining room.

Valentine’s day is nearly here. Have you made your plans yet?

So, here are 3 restaurants I think are great choices for Valentine’s Day. These restaurants have great food, a good atmosphere and won’t break the bank. Oh yeah, and as of the time this post is published, you can still score a table there, but hurry.

This is a small restaurant that specialized in middle eastern food and Hookahs. They have a 4 course meal for between $35 and $45 per person, depending on your seating time.

Pura Vida
Tapas are so sexy! There’s something about the small plates and sharing all the dishes with each other. Pura Vida’s Valentine’s special includes 6 tapas (for the couple), a bottle of wine, and a dessert to share. They stress that the menu will highlight aphrodisiacs. Oysters anyone? Price is $40 per person.

WaterHaven is a really overlooked restaurant. I’m sure due to it’s location near GA Tech, it is often forgotten. But it is truly lovely inside and the food is incredible. Their Valentine’s menu is only $35 per person and a fantastic deal! Also, wine is half off that night.

Guys this is a great restaurant if you’re stumped for one. And they are wide open for reservations at the time of this post. Check out the Valentine menu below. I recommend the lamb sliders followed by the trout.

STARTERS

Ok, still want a reservation at one of those fancy, expensive restaurants? I’ve made a reservation for Dogwood restaurant on Valentine’s Day, which is completely booked between 5 and 9PM. They have a Prix Fix menu for $60 per person.

Wisteria, Inman Park, Atlanta, GA Restaurant Review

Whenever I have a friend visiting from out of town, I’m torn with the decision: take them somewhere new to me or go to a restaurant I’ve frequented before and know to be good? I was downtown with my friend Mike as we were attending a trade show. And I really didn’t want to subject him to the chain restaurant hell that plagues downtown Atlanta. I chose to leave that for the other trade show suckers and patronize an independent establishment.

This time, I chose to take my chances and visit Wisteria Restaurant in Inman Park for the first time. Mike asked me what kind of food it was. I said Southern food and noticed he got pretty quiet. After a short cab ride from our hotel, we were dropped off at Wisteria. Once settled inside, he breathed a sigh of relief, admitting he was a little frightened when I said it was Southern food. To him, the term “Southern” conjured up visions of the movie Deliverance. He’s a Yankee, y’all, but I don’t hold that against him.

Wisteria couldn’t have been more the opposite. With it’s brick and faux finished walls, dim lighting and tall ceilings with exposed ductwork, it was the perfect restaurant for us on that absolutely frigid evening. This was the second week of January with snow and temps in the teens.

We ordered drinks – Mike (Vodka Gimlet), me (House drink called Patrice made with tequila and champagne) and proceeded to enjoy a leisurely dinner. Mike mentioned how well he found the drink to be made, as he shared that although it is a pretty simple drink more often than not he’s had it made poorly. I was equally pleased with my concoction as well.

As it was a Thursday evening, the restaurant wasn’t particularly crowded. And I’m not sure why, but they sat us about 3 or 4 tables away from the front door. I should have asked to be moved, but for whatever reason didn’t, and every time that door opened, I regretted it.

Moving on to appetizers, we chose the Ahi Tuna and the Mussels. The Ahi Tuna came on “flatbread” but I’ve come to find out the term flatbread seems somewhat open to interpretation. This time the flatbread seemed like more of tortilla chips than anything else. Actually it really didn’t matter that much as I was only using the chips to scoop the tuna onto my plate and then eating it with my fork. The avocados, micro greens and citrus horseradish vinaigrette all added to making it one delicious app.

The mussels were another great choice and perfect for sharing as well. I am a little jealous of Mike though, he seemed to pick out all the huge ones. As a tip, if you’ve finished your bread before they bring the mussels, ask for more, you’ll need it. While I like the crostini bread that comes with the mussels, it does nothing to soak up the broth. I did, however pile up some of the tomatoes on top and eat it that way.

The wine list is daunting. There’s so much to choose from and the descriptions just make you want to order everything. Not being in the mood nor mindset to pour over a verbose wine list, we asked our server to make a recommendation on a bottle. She mentioned a Sangiovese that was on special for $32 a bottle. Usually, when I hear “special”, I interpret that as “we’ve got to move these quickly” But after having a taste, we loved it and settled on that for the evening. The hostess even poured it into a decanter for us – nice touch!

Wisteria Molasses Pork Tenderloin

Wisteria Molasses Pork Tenderloin

I sort of had my mind on the molasses rubbed pork, especially after the seafood apps, I was ready for some meat. I still cannot for the life of me get used to the fact that I’m now being asked how I want my pork done. I thought it was always well done but if I’m remembering correctly, our server did ask me if I wanted it medium or medium rare. Huh? I said medium well. Maybe medium rare pork is hip right now, but I’m not ready to be eating medium rare pork just yet.

I found the entree to be decent but not a standout, definitely not compared to our apps. The apples, onions, molasses sauce didn’t really have any punch to them and didn’t really come together well in that dish. The pork was perfectly fine, but just didn’t blow me away.

Wisteria Fried Catfish

Wisteria Fried Catfish

Mike seemed to be pretty pleased with his catfish. I had a bite and definitely thought the flavor combo in his dish (green tomato, okra and spicy crawfish ragout with remoulade) worked better than in mine.

Although I was pretty stuffed, I did want to have a taste of dessert, 3 in fact: creme brulee, bread pudding and pumpkin cheesecake. Wisteria offers 3 tastings for $10. My least favorite was the pumpkin cheesecake, pretty blah. The creme brulee was a step up and pretty solid. But I was most impressed by the bread pudding. Not something I would normally order as it is just too sweet for me, our server said it is probably the best dessert on the menu and I did thoroughly enjoy the couple bites I did have.

As I watched the snow falling outside, and felt all cozy on the inside, I was very pleased that we had trekked out to Wisteria. I love that Atlanta has cool little pockets of neighborhoods like Inman Park and has hidden gems like Wisteria planted throughout them. It is just a shame the out-of-towners don’t bother to seek them out, as many are just a short cab ride away from downtown.

Waterstone Grill, Acworth, Atlanta, GA Restaurant Review

Downtown Acworth has been going through a renovation over the last couple years. Several notable restaurants are located there, including Henry’s, The Old Mill, Fusco’s Via Rome, and my most recent discovery the Waterstone Grill.

Full disclosure: Waterstone Grill invited me to review their restaurant. I had the pleasure of chatting with owner, Joanne Tubo and learning about the history behind the historic building. Turns out, Joanne and her husband own the buildings on either side of the Waterstone Grill. In fact, Waterstone Grill was once home to Henry’s before they moved a couple doors down a bigger space.

Joanne told me they spent 2 years completely renovating the space. And it shows from floor to ceiling. Beyond the dark woods prevalent throughout the intimate restaurant, you’ll see stamped ceiling tiles, brick walls, and against the back wall, a beautifully tiled drink station. Architecture lesson: the space was once an alleyway and converted into a building using the walls of the exterior buildings on each side, the term being an infill building. When you visit, note the different styles of brick on each side of the restaurant.

Shortly after being seated, Jackie, our server for the evening, suggested we do a tasting of Waterstone’s house wines. I obliged thinking, “how good is house wine?”, especially at only $5 a glass, but I was pleasantly surprised. Of the whites, the Sauvignon Blanc was the best, and of the reds, the Merlot was a clear winner. The brand, called Foxbrook, is one I’ve not heard of and Joanne told me they aren’t available for retail, one of the reasons she chose the brand.

Waterstone Zucchini Rolls

Waterstone Zucchini Rolls

Our complimentary rolls included not only regular rolls but a zucchini muffin type of roll as well. These were slightly sweet and very moist. I like that they offer something a little different than average rolls. I’m not the only one who likes them this much – they’ve become so popular with regulars, that the AJC has published the recipe in a recent issue.

Soup of the day was Crab Bisque and Jackie didn’t have to twist my arm much to give it a try. It was creamy, a tad spicy, a chock full of crabmeat. Hands down, some of the best crab bisque I’ve ever had. Now Glen went for the French Onion soup. His mom has a special recipe she prepares every Christmas that I just love and this tasted just like it. FOS can be tricky as it is pretty easy to over salt it, but this was the perfect balance of sweet onions, gooey cheese, and flavorful broth.

Waterstone Grill French Onion Soup

Waterstone Grill French Onion Soup

Although my soup was small, it was very filling, and I could have quite easily jumped into the main course, but I absolutely had to try a couple appetizers: calamari and bacon wrapped shrimp with spicy bbq glaze. Be warned: the glaze is pretty hot, so if you don’t like too much heat, I’d avoid this app.

Waterstone Calamari

Waterstone Calamari

As for the calamari, when I saw that there was a lot of friend peppers within it, I thought the peppers were there as an extender, but once I started eating I found the calamari was complimented by the peppers. It came with a marinara and a soy ginger dipping sauce. I really didn’t care of the ginger sauce – it seemed to have too much soy and not enough sweet to it.

Waterstone Calamari

Waterstone Calamari

At this point, we had had quite a bit of seafood, and perhaps it would have been a good idea to try a steak or chicken dish, but we just couldn’t resist the scallops with potatoes au gratin or sesame trout. When I saw our dishes come out, I knew we’d made the right choice. My scallops, 6 of them altogether were cooked just right and the orange scented cream sauce paired well with the scallops, which I later found out is one of both Joanne and Jackie’s favorite dishes.

Waterstone Sesame Trout

Waterstone Sesame Trout

The trout was a huge portion; the 2 large pieces could easily feed two. And it is coated in both white and black sesame seeds. I found it to be tasty as Glen did, cleaning his plate. Our sides (yellow rice and potatoes au gratin) were winners too, not just there to take up space on the plate.

For dessert, we sampled the crème brulee and the blueberry and lemon pound cake. You can’t go wrong with either one of these desserts, although I’m slightly partial to the pound cake. The combination of tart blueberries with the sweet lemony cake is delicious.

Waterstone lemon-blueberry cake

Waterstone lemon-blueberry cake

I kept a rolling total of our bill in my mind – $75 for everything. That included wine, 2 of the each: soup, appetizers, entrees and desserts. Beautiful atmosphere, great service, tasty, moderately priced food and free parking! Good luck finding all of that ITP.

Waterstone Grill is open for lunch and dinner everyday but Sunday. I can’t wait to visit again and try the Pear, Walnut, and Goat cheese salad along with their Smoked Gouda Risotto – a bargain at under $4 a piece. And they have a martini menu that has nearly 10 specials including a Snickerdoodle martini.

Extras: On Saturdays get a bottle of house wine for $10.

Soba Bar and Bistro, Marietta, Atlanta, GA Restaurant Review

Soba Bar and Bistro is exactly what East Cobb needed in the exact location it needed it. There are not many non-chain restaurants in East Cobb, and even less with superior decor, food and service. Open for about 2 years, Soba is a freestanding building located off of Piedmont Rd near Roswell Road in the Publix Shopping center just across the street from the YMCA. Soba’s cuisine is Asian – with an offering of sushi, chinese and thai.

Bar at Soba

Bar at Soba

Stepping inside Soba Bar and Bistro, you would never know that it once housed El Toro restaurant. The restaurant has been completely transformed. Gone are any traces of a chain Mexican restaurant, replaced by beautifully appointed furnishings and several semi-private dining areas, perfect for groups or couples.

We were seated at a booth, but due to the proximity of a family with a screaming baby we chose to move to a more private area. Seriously people, do you really need to be told it is rude to have your screaming kid at a nice restaurant after 8 pm on a Friday night? But I digress…the staff was super friendly about us wanting to move.

Soba Pork Dumplings

Soba Pork Dumplings

Much happier with out new seating arrangements, we perused the menu. Torn between the calamari and the pork dumplings, we chose the dumplings as it was the healthier option (not being fried). The six dumplings came out shortly and were extremely tasty. It is a perfect appetizer for two to share.

Soba Firecracker Shrimp

Soba Firecracker Shrimp

I ordered the firecracker shrimp which to me is close to a Szechwan shrimp. And Glen, although a little skeptical, ordered the tuna steak. Having not eaten here before, we weren’t sure how fresh the fish would be, but the tuna was done perfectly. The pink center was just right, not to mention what a generous portion it was.

Soba Tuna

Soba Tuna

We finished the evening with the Xango Cheesecake. This is cheesecake wrapped in wonton-like substance and drizzled with lemon, raspberry and chocolate sauce. The plating was absolutely beautiful. Although I was pretty full at this point, it was totally worth it.

Soba Xango Cheesecake

Our server was helpful, friendly and efficient the entire night, making great recommendations. He may have been a little green (perhaps this is his first server job) but his eagerness to please made the service completely enjoyable. Entrees are priced modestly under $20 and there are beer and wine specials even on a weekend night. Overall, Soba Bar and Bistro is a great find in East Cobb.

4th and Swift Atlanta, GA Restaurant Review

4th and Swift has been on my radar for quite a while and I can’t believe it took me so long to give it a try. Upon approaching 4th and Swift, I was amazed at how that Old Fourth Ward area has been transformed. I remember 10 plus years ago, when the only thing around was the Masquerade.

So, pulling up and feeling a little nostalgic about my Masquerade 80s nights, I found an empty spot and parked. I was a little confused as to whether I was supposed to valet or not but found out valet is optional at 4th and Swift. If you want to take advantage of the valet simply pull up and wait and someone will help you.

My outing to 4th and Swift was a belated birthday present from my BFF, Steve. Upon entering we immediately noticed how packed it was. Steve immediately turned to me and said “What Recession?” We were then seated at what I think is probably the best table in the restaurant. It is a curved booth against the wall of the restaurant. I like that it gives a great view of the restaurant, bar area and the kitchen.

4th and Swift Dining Room

4th and Swift Dining Room

4th and Swift reminds me of restaurants like Rathbun’s and One Midtown Kitchen as far as it’s decor. With its stained concrete flooring, high ceilings, and low lighting, it has an overall industrial look and feel to it.

So, I had checked out the menu online and had determined that I would have the lamb lasagna. Although it was listed under the “small plates” section, many reviews said it was an adequate portion for a dinner entree and oh so good.

I logged on the day of our reservation to check the menu again, only to find that 4th and Swift had changed to their spring menu. The lamb lasagna was no longer offered. What?!?! My heart sank, and when the restaurant called me to verify my reservation for later that evening, I asked if it was really not possible to get the lamb lasagna, although I already knew the answer.

Fast forward to dinner that night. As I said, I looked at their online menu but they also have a daily menu with other offerings, not listed on the website. There were some fish offerings on the daily menu, but I really had my mind on the lamb.

Our server, approached our table and mentioned off the bat that she had heard I wanted the lamb and that although I couldn’t get it in the form of lasagna as I had wanted the new lamb entree on the menu was fantastic and that I should give it a try. I thought this was a nice touch that the hostess or whoever it was that called to verify my reservation passed that along.

While neither Steve or myself found any appetizers we wanted to try we went straight for the main courses and decided this would save us room for dessert. I had the lamb and Steve had the Cod fish. I also took our server’s recommendation on wine – a spicy Shiraz. Steve had a beer, but I can’t remember the name. They have just over 10 beers to chose from, a good mix of beers most around $5-6, but you won’t find Budweiser or Coors here. It is an ecclectic mix of small breweries, the only names which I recognized were Peroni and Sweetwater.

4th and Swift Rolls

4th and Swift Rolls

We were brought some rolls and crispy flatbreads to start. The rolls reminded me of the type you get at Red Lobster. You know, the garlic cheddar biscuits? Except these were smaller and not as flavorful. The crispy flatbread was better.

4th and Swift Cod Fish

4th and Swift Cod Fish

Steve’s Cod fish was cooked just right and came on a bed of rice and vegetables. I thought it was fantastic, but Steve thought that the portion was rather small, especially for $25. The plating of my lamb was beautiful. It came with one lamb chop, and some shredded lamb (shoulder) as well as the fried eggplant and some veggies.

My lamb chop was just ok, even for a lamb chop it was pretty small, albeit cooked medium just as I had asked. I liked the shredded lamb part better. It had a spiciness that paired well with my Shiraz. The only thing is I could have done without the yogurt they put on top of it. I understand the idea, mix the yogurt with the shredded lamb to cut the heat, but I just scooped it to the side and didn’t mess with it. It was fine, I just don’t care for that.

4th and Swift Lamb

4th and Swift Lamb

As far as the fried eggplant, I was looking forward to this too, as I love eggplant, but I was disappointed after just one bite. One cut into these eggplant “sticks” the fried part fell right off and I was left with cooked eggplant with no flavor. I suppose I was expecting something like the eggplant fries offered at Rathbun’s. Topped with powdered sugar, those are phenomenal. The eggplant at 4th and Swift was completely tasteless.

Even though we felt less than thrilled with our food at this point, we decided we’d give dessert a try and Steve chose the Churros which come with a whipped chocolate dipping sauce. If you aren’t familiar with churros they are like sticks of dough covered with cinnamon and sugar. So, we got our 2 churro sticks which we finished in 2 bites. They must’ve been 4 inches long. So, there we sat with 3/4 cup left of chocolate sauce. I don’t know why you would get so much sauce and so little churro.

4th and Swift Churros

4th and Swift Churros

I had high expectations of 4th and Swift, and although the service was outstanding, they fell short in the food department. With the $30 price tag I expected to get 2 lamb chops. If you price lamb in the grocery store, chops are very expensive, but the shoulder is pretty cheap. So, I felt a little “cheated” there. 4th and Swift has received glowing reviews from just about every food critic and I’m sure they’ll continue to flourish, but I just feel it is a bit too pricey for what you get.

C&S Oyster Bar, Vinings Atlanta, GA Restaurant Review

I had been salivating over C&S Oyster bar ever since I first heard of them opening in Atlanta. I admit I was pretty jealous of Glen as he had been to C&S Oyster Bar on at least 3 business dinners without me. But I finally got to tag along on one of them and visiting C&S Oyster Bar was the highlight of my week. The downside of it being a business dinner? I wasn’t able to take any pictures, which is a shame because the presentation was beautiful.

The only thing that knocks them down a few pegs in my book is the valet parking. I mean, come on, this isn’t Buckhead. They are located in a strip mall that is anchored by a grocery store. I think the valet parking is a little over the top. Especially given the fact that this is a busy strip mall, I think its ridiculous for the valet to take up so many primo parking spots. The parking lot was just about full on the Thursday evening when I visited, so I can’t imagine how it must be on a weekend night.

But putting all that aside, once you get inside, and sip on a cocktail, you’ll forget you even are in a strip mall and feel like you’ve been transported to a 1920s speakeasy. There were 4 of us dining at C&S and it was a celebratory dinner for a project that had just been completed at Glen’s work, so I could almost hear the cha-ching as our gluttony continued on during the evening. Yeah, this is definitely a great place to go on an expense account.

The chef that evening started us off with an amuse bouche of Tuna Tartar. I quickly decided if that was the amuse bouche than I was in for a treat for my meal.

We all agreed that oysters were a must and started off with the a la carte option. Really like that they have this available. You can pick and choose which oysters you’d like to add to your order instead of ordering 6 of one kind and 6 of another, etc. Oyster selection, which varies from New England to Washington, were all extraordinary. I had some from New England and decided to try the Kumomoto ones from Washington which our waiter, Barrett described as tasting like cantaloupe. I don’t know if they tasted like cantaloupe but it was definitely a different taste with a sweet beginning and salty end. I highly recommend giving them a try on your visit to C&S Oyster Bar. Barrett even was gracious to bring us a palate cleanser of sorbet after our oysters.

Our sampling was not limited to oysters, oh no, we sampled about 4 different bottles of wine as well. Two whites and two reds. Glen and I are more red wine drinkers and our dining companions stuck with white wine. I did taste some of the second bottle of Pinot Grigio and it was amazing. Kudos to Barrett for being able to recommend some great wines.

So here’s how our entrees paned out:

  • Lobster Tails – Our dining companion liked them but would have preferred if the shell had been cut back a little to get the meat out. She struggled with that. I don’t blame her, especially with the $50 price tag.
  • Flounder stuffed with crab – That was my entree. I was torn as I really love Chilean Seabass but Barrett convinced me I would not be disappointed and I wasn’t. I loved the caviar butter sauce that it was in too. Really was a nice balance to the flounder.
  • Tuna steak – Glen’s dish. I didn’t have a taste but he said it was delicious.
  • Whole fish – I’m talking head, tail, and all. Cannot remember the name but our waiter described it as the “wolf of the sea” Dining companion #2 had this and cleaned his plate. Enough said.

I will say that although we consumed a lot of food I felt full, but not overly so. It seemed like a light meal overall. Not wanting to skip dessert, we got 2 orders of key lime pie. Dessert portions (at least the key lime pie) are large enough for 2 to share, but not gigantic to the point that you cannot possibly finish. I have to mention that one of my pet peeves when dining out is to have coffee with my dessert and we were done with dessert by the time the coffee came to the table which was a slight disappointment as everything else had been on point the entire evening.

The bottom line? C&S Oyster Bar is a great place for both business dinners and to celebrate a special occasion. Definitely for the seafood lover in you.

Mitra, Midtown, Atlanta, GA Restaurant Review

Tasty Food, Top Notch Service, and Beautiful Atmosphere.

Mitra is one of the many restaurants off of Juniper and in Midtown that is a converted house. It is beautiful and full of bold colors inside. The lighting fixtures in Mitra are truly one of a kind and definitely add to the ambiance of the restaurant. As you walk up the front entrance, there is a beautiful water fountain cascading over the Mitra sign. Once inside, Mitra does well with the space it has. Tables are set to make the most of the space, without customers feeling crowded.

On the recent Friday night when I visited Mitra, it was pretty crowded when we arrived at 830 but by the time we were leaving the place had pretty much died down. Service was very friendly and efficient. Our server (besides being eye candy) was very knowledgeable not only about the menu but the wine selection. We opted for a bottle as there is not a huge selection of wines by the glass, and were very pleased with his recommendation.

Having eaten at Mitra once before, I knew we were in for a treat. We started with the calamari, which I remembered having last time and loving every bite. I was tempted to stray from the calamari to the beef chuzos (beef skewers with pomegranite sauce) but just couldn’t bring myself to do it. It is some of the best calamari I’ve ever had. My guess is they use a lighter batter like tempura to fry the calamari. It comes in a cone shaped container with chop sticks. Some spicy aioli is dripped over it as well as cilantro. It is the perfect flavor.

Last visit, Glen and I ordered a couple appetizers and shared the special – Sea Bass. The moment we had our first taste we wished we had each gotten an entree of our own. This time at Mitra, I had the jalepeno lime scallops and Glen had the pulled pork. My scallops were cooked perfectly and the jalepeno sauce was enough to feel some heat but not overwhelming. Glen enjoyed his pork entree, but we both thought the potatoes were a bit bland. I know I’m not a chef but I think adding magoes in place of the potatoes would be an awesome flavor combination. Just a suggestion ;-)

The atmosphere is perfect for a date, probably not a good place for a group. I plan on going back to sample some more appetizers. I hear that they have a happy hour that includes drinks and appetizers for $5 each. But I didn’t see any mention of this on their website.

Plan a Cheap Date without Being a Cheapskate

The economy is not looking good and everything but your salary is going up. So you want to plan a nice date without it being completely obvious that you are trying to conserve your money. No problem. Here are 9 ways to have a fun date without breaking the bank.

Wine Tasting
Wine tastings are all over the city. Restaurants are doing anything and everything they can to lure customers in. Pick up creative loafing for a list of restaurants near you that offer flight nights. This is really common on Wednesdays. Don’t know what it is about Wednesdays, but that seems to be a popular night for these events. Oh, and the other good thing is, these restaurants don’t want people getting sloshed and driving home, so more than likely they will offer some free appetizers with the wine.

The Grape which is all over the city has these events on Wednesdays and they are very reasonably priced. Eclipse di Luna also has some wine testing events usually the first Tuesday of every month. The last event I went to was $10 per person and very affordable for what you get which includes some appetizers.

Hike and Picnic
Why not get some exercise in while you are enjoying time with your sweetie? There are many hiking trails around the Atlanta area great for having a picnic. In Kennesaw/ Marietta there is Kennesaw mountain which has plenty of spots for a romantic picnic. On the other side of the city is Stone Mountain which really give you a workout if you climb to the top. Sweewater Creek State Park is also a great place to go hiking with very scenic views. There are even some old ruins from an old mill you’ll pass by.

Beer Tour
We are lucky to have Sweetwater Brewing in our backyard. Sweetwater Brewery opened its doors 12 years ago. If you haven’t tried it, Sweetwater is a very likable beer. They have their main beer, Sweetwater 420 and different seasonal brews.
Brewery tours are every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 5:30. They only last about 20 minutes, but part of the fun is hanging around in the parking lot and sampling beer. Make sure one of you doesn’t drink too much and remains the designated driver. Or plan on going somewhere nearby to grab some chow and sober up.

Drive in Movie
The only drive-in I know of in Atlanta is the Starlight Drive-In Theatre off of Moreland Avenue. It is $7 per person and includes 2 movies. Yes, that’s right 2 movies. So, why not get some fried chicken or some good takeout food that you enjoy and make a whole evening of it?

Have Coffee at an upscale place.
No I’m not talking about Starbucks. Although Starbucks has a nice atmosphere, there are plenty of other coffee lounges around Atlanta to enjoy your coffee. There is Apres Diem (Midtown) and Carpe Diem (Decatur). Cafe Intermezzo would be my first choice though. It is hands down one of the most romantic spots to me. You can go and enjoy some damn good coffee and people watching. There are two locations – Dunwoody and Brookhaven. I prefer the Brookhaven location as it is a little more romantic but both have equally good coffee and desserts.

Silver Comet Trail
Another exercise date, the Silver Comet trail is a paved path that runs almost to Alabama if I’m not mistaken. Although you can walk on the trail, I wouldn’t recommend it has that can get pretty boring, even if you have someone’s eyes to gaze into.
Rollerblading is your best option. The narrow path is great for those you are pretty good at the sport. However, if you aren’t this is not the place to learn as it can get pretty crowded. And I’m sure you don’t want an audience for the first time you fall on your ass.
If Rollerblading isn’t your thing, than you could also rent bikes. Although it has been a while since I was on this trail, I believe there are bikes for rent at the entrance in Vinings.

Adult Store
Probably not the best idea if you are just starting to date or this is your first date. But Adult novelty stores can be a lot of fun. Before taking your partner, you should really get to know them a little and make sure they are up for it. They may be the kind of person who is pretty uncomfortable in those surroundings.
Besides toys, there are clothing (of sorts), gag gifts, funny cards, and a movie for every type of fetish. You can really get to know your date this way!!

Play Darts
Something about darts brings out the competitor in me. I don’t know what it is about darts, but I’m always out to win. The great thing about darts is that you don’t really have to have any physical skills to be able to play it. Just aim and throw. That’s about it. I guarantee some laughs while you and your partner go a few rounds. But as a tip, it really is great if you have about 4 playing so why not make it a double date? The rental of the darts is usually only 1 or 2 bucks. So it will only cost you that and the 1 or 2 beers you drink.

Taste of Festival
There is always one festival or another going on whether it be centered around crafts, food, etc, etc. These are always fun and cost almost nothing. Of course food festivals will cost some but usually not more than $10.

There are lots of cheap ideas. What have I missed? Please leave your comments and let me know?
