The Ick Factor: Mysterious Ingredients in Our Food

Thanks or maybe no thanks to my friend Wendy for making me aware of the following articles. These are foods that we eat that contain ingredients you just wouldn’t expect.

Cool Whip: A delicious blend of sugar, wax, and condom lube.
Ok, so the most common ingredients are water and air. No problem. But did you know there isn’t any actual cream in Cool Whip? The next ingredient on the list of High Fructose corn syrup, which we all know isn’t good for us.

As I said, there isn’t any actual cream in Cool Whip, but it needs to feel like there is. So, the cheap way to duplicate the texture is by using semi-solidified plant oils, which if not produced properly can turn into trans fat. Sorbitan Monostearate is a synthetic was that helps Cool Whip from turning into a liquid and is also used as a hemorrhoid cream. Xanthan and Guar Gums help give it fluffiness.

And last, but not least: Polysorbate 60.Polysorbates are made by mixing ethylene oxide (a precursor to antifreeze) with a sugar alcohol derivative. The result can be a detergent, an emulsifier, or, in the case of polysorbate 60, a major ingredient in some sexual lubricants. Nice.

Ammonia Hamburgers Anyone?
So, there’s a South Dakota company called Beef Products Inc., which makes a hamburger filler product that ends up in 70 percent of burgers in the United States. The company, Beef Products buys the cheapest, fattiest leftovers from the slaughterhouse floor. These are chock full of pathogens like E.coli 0157, etc. It then injects a substance with ammonia to kill the pathogens.

Some in the industry call this “pink slime” and it is why you can buy a burger at your local fast food joint for a buck. And it’s so full of ammonia that it will kill pathogens in the ground beef it’s mixed with, or so they say. Test results from Beef Products actually revealed that pink slime can actually add to the pathogen cocktail.

So what companies actually buy this? Cargrill, McDonald’s, Burger King and most likely your kids’ public school cafeteria. And if it doesn’t really work all the well, why do companies continue to buy it? It’s cheap – bottom line.

Our National School Lunch Program, says that students must be fed lunch for $2.68 per day, of which 2/3 must go to labor and overhead, leaving less than $1 for actual food and nutrition. No wonder the lunch program keeps pink slime in business—buying 3.5 million pounds last year alone.

ScoutMob Site Review, Atlanta, GA

Remember Skyblox from a couple months ago? Maybe you saw some of their signs in local businesses and restaurants around the ATL. Skyblox provides free WI-FI in these establishments. Well, ScoutMob is brought to you by the folks who started Skyblox.

So, the tagline is “Curious Local Finds. Absurd Mobile Deals.” The new site highlights cool things to do around Atlanta and local personalities. But the real cool thing, at least to a bargain hunter like me, are the 50% off deals they have. You just sign up via email or cell (they won’t spam you) and the deal is sent to your phone or inbox.

The cost? Nada. Yep, that’s right. Move over Groupon and Restaurant.com, ScoutMob is absolutely free. I’ve signed up for 2 deals so far. Half off at No Mas Cantina and half off at Murphy’s Restaurant. Now, keep in the mind the deals are only good for (on average) 3 months, but hey, it cost you nothing, so what do you care?

Got an iPhone? I’m jealous. But seriously, ScoutMob has an iPhone app that will send you all the deals directly and you can just pull it up and show to your server, no need to print it out.

Check out their site here.

The Shed at Glenwood Atlanta, GA Harvest Night

Chef Lance Gummere gets you to eat your veggies!

I’ve been sitting on this post for a while, and thought it was high time I finished it. I first visited The Shed at Glenwood last summer for a tasting of their summer menu.

Immediately, I was a fan. But I also noted they have affordable specials weekdays that really make it worthwhile to visit. My original intent was to visit on Wednesday: slider night. They feature different types of sliders each Wednesday whether that be chicken, pork, beef, etc for a measly 3 bucks. And these are no wimpy sliders – they are large and full of meat.

However, it worked out that my dining companion could only make it on Thursday: Harvest night (4 veggies for $10). Never one who would choose veggies over meat, I was a little disappointed. But all was not lost.

The Shed at Glenwood Scallop Sliders

The Shed at Glenwood Scallop Sliders

We started off sharing the scallop sliders. These are 2 sliders filled with large fried scallops topped with jalapeno slaw and spicy mayo. Maybe not 3 bucks, but they were absolutely delicious. Satisfied that I had something non-vegetarian, we decided to to take advantage of the 4 for $10 deal.

The Shed at Glenwood: Sunchokes, Asparagus, Onions

The Shed at Glenwood: Sunchokes, Asparagus, Onions

For our 4 sides we chose sunchokes, asparagus, squash and onion rings. Portions weren’t huge but with an appetizer and 4 to share, it was plenty filling for 2. There wasn’t anything I didn’t like, but my absolute favorite were the sunchokes. If you have never heard of sunchokes, they are also known as Jerusalem Artichokes, read about them here. To me, they tasted like a cross between a potato and an artichoke. More restaurants should serve these.

The Shed at Glenwood Dessert

With room for dessert, we settled on the a berry-topped cake to share. I thought it was decent but could have skipped it altogether and been pretty satisfied with my dining experience. Besides the glasses of wine which we paid for at the bar, the total price per person for all including tip was $20. What a bargain.

Picanha Brazilian Steakhouse and Buffet, Marietta, Atlanta, GA Review

So Glen brought me a slice of heaven a couple weeks back: aka a big ass piece of flan from Picanha Brazilian Steakhouse. He and his coworkers discovered Picanha Steakhouse and Buffet recently which is located in Marietta near Powers Ferry and Terrill Mill Road. Think of it as the poor man’s Fogo de Chao – it is about 1/4 of the price of Fogo de Chao or Sal Grosso down the street. Oh, they also have about 1/4 of the selection.

We arrived on a miserably cold and rainy Saturday afternoon after dropping off a friend who lives nearby. Picanha was deserted save for one large group of Brazilians (about 10 of them in the all). The restaurant isn’t huge probably about 15 tables in the dining area. And don’t think it is going to be decked out in the same fashion as Sal Grosso down the street, Picanha is pretty bare bones. My apologies in advance for the poor pics as they were taken with a cell phone.

First we hit the salad / vegetable buffet. Salads looked fresh with options like caesar, tomato, onion and cucumber or chicken salad. But moving on to the hot section was an utter disappointment. The choices here were severely lacking. We were limited to white rice, black beans, okra, vegetable rice dish, and a couple other indistinguishable offerings.

Picanha Vegetables and Meats (sausage, drumstick, chicken hearts)

Picanha Vegetables and Meats (sausage, drumstick, chicken hearts)

Besides the fact that nothing was labeled, you could immediately tell which where the most popular items (white rice and okra) as there were slim pickings of both left the first time I went through the line. My second time around the Picanha’s buffet, the rice was replaced but the okra had about 10 lonely pieces left- tsk tsk. On the bright side, at least you don’t have to worry about filling up on the buffet like at the higher end churrascarias.

Picanha Buffet Oven

Picanha Buffet Oven

Don’t expect to see any servers wandering around with huge skewers of meat. They do things differently at Picanha. Separate from the buffet near the register, you’ll see the ovens with skewers of meat. There’s a server behind the counter and you indicate to him what you want: Top Sirloin, Bottom Round, Garlic Steak, Pork Sausage, Chicken Drumstick and Chicken Hearts were on the menu on my visit. The plates for meat are very small, only enough for about 2 different cuts of meat at a time, which I’m guessing is their attempt to avoid waste.

I tried everything, even the chicken hearts. The best item was the Bottom Round, we had a perfect slice – juicy and cooked just right without too much salt. Definitely the highlight of the meal. I found the Top Sirloin and Pork Sausage to be nicely cooked but pretty salty. I used my rice and beans to mitigate the salt factor. The Garlic Steak was extremely fatty, but salt proportion was normal – I guess one health risk at a time.

Now this was my first time sampling chicken hearts – there was a plethora of salt and spices on them, so it was difficult to discern the actual organ flavor but they looked and tasted like meaty mushrooms. I’d love to taste them at a restaurant that let’s their true flavor come true.

For the amount of meat available to chow down on, prices are reasonable. Cost is $10 Monday through Friday. Weekends are $13. There’s no difference between lunch and dinner, all the same cost. The buffet only (excluding meats) is about $7, although given the pathetic offering I don’t know why anyone would choose that. Although the staff was friendly, it would have been nice if they told us a soft drink was included with our meal after we all opted for water.

It seems that Picanha Steakhouse started off with a bang and that some of the quality has slipped. I think for the price, offering 5 or 6 meats is fine. My only real quibble is with the offering and replenishment of the vegetables. As inexpensive as those items are, they could provide more of a variety and replace them more frequently. I hear Sabor do Brazil down the street has better quality and I’ll be checking them out soon enough.

Low Calorie / Low Cost Chicken Meals: KFC vs. El Pollo Loco

KFC recently launched a grilled chicken meal with 395 calories for $3.95. The 395-calorie meal includes a Kentucky Grilled Chicken drumstick and thigh, green beans and mashed potatoes and gravy. The introduction of this campaign comes just after Kentucky Grilled Chicken was named one of the most successful product launches of 2009 – (survey was conducted by Schneider Associates, IRI and Sentient Decision Science) proof that any publicity, even bad publicity is good.

Not to be outdone, El Pollo Loco’s come out with a lower calorie / cheaper meal. El Pollo Loco’s Skinless Breast Meal is a citrus-marinated, flame-grilled skinless chicken breast served with fresh steamed vegetables, a garden salad and fresh salsa with 275 calories. With the coupon below, you can get the meal for $2.75. KFC’s deal doesn’t require a coupon. Not sure what the price is after the coupon expires on 12/17. You decide which is better.

Restaurant.com Feed it Forward Program

I opened up my email Thanksgiving Day and had the following email from Restaurant.com:

“We have all seen the news coverage about job losses, business failures, housing foreclosures and more in these tough economic times. As the giving season is upon us many wonder how they will give to those on their holiday lists. The reality is that many holiday lists will be cut short. The team at Restaurant.com wants to help.

To celebrate the gift of giving, Restaurant.com is stocking a giving site with $30 million of Restaurant.com Gift Certificates. You now have the opportunity, every day for 30 days, to enrich the lives and satisfy the palates of those around you. It is absolutely FREE to give and FREE to receive.”

I checked it out and it seems to be legit. The offers are for $10 gift certificates which you can give to anyone. You can give up to 30 people a day until Christmas. One caveat: you are basically giving your friends and family’s email addresses away to Restaurant.com. Smart way for Restaurant.com to get a bunch of email addresses to advertise to.
