Studio Movie Grill, Roswell, Atlanta, GA Review

Similar to the old Buckhead Backlot theatre, Studio Movie Grill combines the dinner and show concept. Studio Movie Grill opened in the Alpharetta / Roswell area this past June. Studio Movie Grill is great for Roswellites, only about 3 miles down Holcomb Bridge Rd from 400. Unfortunately for me, I missed the opportunity to attend their media event as I was out of town, but Studio Movie Grill invited me back to see a flick and sample their goods on a recent Sunday afternoon. Full disclosure: I was comped the movie tickets and meal as part of my review.

Man it is hot in Atlanta in August! And what a better way to spend an absolutely scorching Sunday afternoon than in a cool theatre, sipping on an ice cold Margarita? They have lots of cocktails at Studio Movie Grill and of course, beer and wine are available too. When you enter Studio Movie Grill, just beyond the ticketing area, you’ll see a bar to your left. It seemed odd to me that people would be hanging out in a bar at a movie theatre in the middle of the afternoon, but there were several patrons doing just that.

We chose to see the new Angelina Jolie flick, Salt. Totally unbelievable but certainly entertaining. But I digress. You have a choice of buying tickets in advance or purchasing them at the theatre box office. Prices are just under $10 after 6pm and only $8 before 6pm ANY day, not just weekdays.

If you are going on weekend night or seeing a recent release, I would suggest getting tickets in advance. As the theatres have tables / bars for eating, you can imagine this takes up some real estate, allowing for less seating. Studio Movie Grill also offers reserved seating. This requires that you pre-purchase a movie ticket and a $12 dining credit. If you go this route, you’ll be prompted to select your seats during the purchase process.

We decided to wait until we were seated before ordering drinks or food. There’s a button on each table you press to alert servers that you want to place an order. They’ll come around and enter in your order on their nifty hand held device. And don’t worry, they’ll drop your check off plenty of time before the movie is over, so you don’t have to sit there waiting on it or change.

Starting the movie experience off with a margarita, choices were a regular for $8.50 or large for $9.50. It’s a no brainer to order the large. For starters, we chose the Tabasco wings and Thai salad with mint dressing. I thought the wings were tasty and meaty, albeit a little expensive at $8.50 for 5 wings. The salad was a large portion and very fresh.

Although the starters at Studio Movie Grill were enjoyable, I highly recommend the Megaplex burger. With bacon, mushrooms, onions and both cheddar and pepper jack cheese, it was juicy and tasty. Even the dark theatre, I didn’t have to see the cheese to tell it was quality. I was kinda bummed that I was slightly full by the time my burger arrived. It is pretty large and the burger, along with my crispy sweet potato fries would have been plenty by itself to fill me up and keep me satisfied for the remainder of the night.

While it may not be a destination for ITPers, it’s something out of the ordinary for North Fulton / Johns Creek dwellers. Oh, and unbeknownst to Studio Movie Grill, I also visited once before this visit, and was treated with the same friendly service on both occasions.

Extras: Kudos to SMG for posting this on their website: “No Children Under Age 2 Will Be Admitted To Any PG-13 or R-Rated Feature After 6:00 PM.” Wish more movie theatres would adopt this policy.

Marlow’s Tavern Red, White and Brew Menu Limited Edition Menu

You guys, I know Marlow’s Tavern is a chain and I usually avoid chain restaurants as much as possible, but I love Marlow’s. Food and service are consistently on point and prices are reasonable. And not only that, but in addition to the favorites customers have come to love, they also add other goodies based on the season.

From now through Monday, July 26, Atlantans can get a taste of America at all Marlow’s Tavern locations with their limited edition Red, White and Brew Menu. Marlow’s locations are offering a “Red, White and Brew” special. During this time, all six locations of Marlow’s will feature special dishes and beverages suited for celebrating summer. This is also the season for grill masters to show off their skills in Marlow’s First Annual Grilling Contest. Menu and more deets below.

I was invited by Josh Calvin, Marlow’s Kennesaw Manager to check out some of the menu offerings with some of my peeps. I tried the Watermelon Margarita (see pic above) and it was cool and refreshing just like you would expect it to be without being too fru fru. Definitely could please a man just as easily as a woman. I know cause Glen liked it too.

Too hot for the beer cheese soup, I really wanted to give the fiery deviled eggs a try (pimento cheese, bacon, and fiery sauce – yum), but alas none of my peeps wanted to give it a try, so we opted for the flatbread of the day which was loaded with arugula and tomatoes. Very fresh and perfect for sharing (see pic above).

Next, I tried the watermelon, feta and arugula salad. I’m on an Arugula craze lately – I can’t enough of this stuff. No feta was in my salad but that was just fine with me. The fresh basil, ginger and balsamic drizzle were a perfect pairing and I didn’t miss the salty feta at all. Again, another cool choice for the summertime.

My friends did get the Red, White and Blue burger (pic at top of the page) as well as the Glazed chicken. I didn’t try them but they both cleaned their plate and said they loved it. Now Glen ordered the skewers which came with Swordfish and shrimp. I thought the Swordfish was average but the Jumbo shrimp were cooked perfectly. I am trying to eat all the seafood I can before it gets crazy expensive with the Gulf disaster.

I tried the Lamb Burger, which wasn’t a summertime addition but something I hadn’t yet tried on the menu. If you like Greek / Mediterranean food, you will definitely love this burger. It comes with a ton of feta cheese and an olive spread. I did order sides of the chili rubbed corn on the cobb and the potato salad. Nothing says summertime like these perennial favorites, but Marlow’s was able to put a tasty and spicy spin on these favorites.

But it doesn’t end there. Marlow’s Tavern even has a dessert to celebrate The Red, White and Blue – Strawberry Shortcake with blueberries of course!

The “Red, White and Brew” menu includes the following dishes, which are offered daily during the four weeks:
• Beer and cheese soup – a light beer soup with garlic, thyme, provolone, Swiss and a Parmesan pretzel crisp ($6)
• Fiery deviled eggs – pimento cheese, applewood smoked bacon, fresh herbs and fire cracker sauce ($2/$5)
• Backyard “Brat” Melt – grilled beer bratwurst, glazed Vidalia onion, red peppers, Creole sauce and Swiss cheese on marbled rye with housemade potato salad ($10)
• Red, White and Bleu Burger – red pepper, Vidalia onion, Maytag bleu cheese on toasted onion bun served with American fries ($9)
• Watermelon, Feta and arugula salad – with fresh basil, ginger and balsamic drizzle ($6)
• Marlow’s grilled skewer – Pacific swordfish, jumbo shrimp, sweet herbs, garlic, black peppered pineapple, red onion, red peppers, mango apple chutney and chili slathered corn on the cob ($17)
• Honey glazed grilled chicken – honey mustard and Meyer lemon blazed, served with loaded fingerling potatoes and chili slathered corn on the cob.
• Sweet berry shortcake – balsamic glazed strawberries, raspberries and blueberries layered with buttery biscuit and vanilla scented mascarpone cream ($6)
• Chili slathered corn on the cob – secret seasoning, chili butter and fresh parsley ($3)

The “Red, White and Brew” menu also features the following specialty beverages to complement the menu items:
• “Summertime” Watermelon Margarita – Herradura Reposado, fresh watermelon syrup, mint, house made sour and fresh lime ($8)
• Tommy’s Favorite Sangria – Savida Sangria, the freshest seasonal fruit and Agave nectar ($8)

During this special Red, White and Brew promotion, the restaurants will also host the First Annual Marlow’s Tavern Grilling Recipe Contest. Interested grillers can enter their favorite recipe at www.marlowstavern.com or fill out an entry form at one of the six tavern locations. Entries will be accepted from June 16 through July 27. Executive Chef John Metz will review all recipes and determine the winners by August 15, 2010. Winners will be notified by phone or email at this time. No purchase is necessary for guests to enter this contest, and entries are limited to one per person or e-mail address. The first prize winner will receive a Big Green Egg and his/her winning recipe will be featured on Marlow’s Tavern’s fall/winter menu. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the winning menu item will be donated in the winner’s name to Special Olympics Georgia.

BURGER is a fast-casual eatery with all-natural ingredients and a commitment sustainability. The restaurant will feature customizable burgers made with White Oak Pastures grass-fed beef from South Georgia, nitrate-free hot dogs, hand-cut French fries, and organic salads. YEAH! BURGER is open everyday from 11 AM to 10PM, except on Fridays and Saturdays when they remain open until 11PM.

With YEAH! BURGER’s fast-casual format, customers place their order at the counter and their food is delivered to the table shortly thereafter. The restaurant also features a convenient carry-out counter where guests can easily grab a quality, customized meal on-the-go. Online and mobile to-go ordering will be available this summer.

Chef Doty, has created a menu with gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options for diners with special nutritional needs. Burgers will start at $5.99 and increase slightly in price depending on guests’ patty and topping selections. First, a customer chooses their bun option. Choices include Southern white and whole wheat buns, a gluten-free bun or a lettuce wrap. Next, the guest chooses their patty: a White Oak Pastures grass-fed beef burger, a naturally-raised bison burger, an organic turkey burger, an organic veggie burger or an organic chicken breast patty. Customers can then top their burger with a large selection of free toppings and $1 premium toppings such as nitrate-free bacon, a fried cage-free egg or sliced avocado.

The bar at YEAH! BURGER seats up to 17 guests and serves a full selection of beer, wine and cocktails. Unique bar offerings include biodynamic wines, organic bottled beer and signature drinks. Non-alcoholic beverage options include fountain drinks, natural sodas, organic teas and fresh juices.

YEAH! BURGER’s socially-conscious approach also extends to its numerous green efforts including offsetting its energy usage with wind power; use of ENERGY STAR equipment throughout the restaurant; installation of water-efficient toilets, bathroom fixtures and kitchen faucets; use of reclaimed wood paneling and table tops; and use of 100% compostable cups and to-go packaging and utensils.

Cypress Street Pint and Plate, Midtown, Atlanta, GA Review

Cypress Street Pint and Plate, you let me down. I’m the go to person in my group for restaurant / bar recommendations and without giving it a second thought recommended Cypress Street Pint and Plate in Midtown for a recent group outing. I had been to Cypress Street Pint and Plate before, and thought the food, service and atmosphere were all decent. Did I mention we were taking an out-of-towner here?

I’m guessing this must be an after work crowd that frequents Cypress Street Pint and Plate, because for a Saturday night, it wasn’t nearly as crowded as I would have expected it to be. It was by no means deserted, just not very crowded for a midtown pub.

If you’ve not been to Cypress Street Pint and Plate, there is the centrally located bar which is surrounded by booths that would accommodate groups of 4 to 6. There is another room off to the side that accommodates large groups, which we were seated in. It was absolutely FREEZING in here the entire evening. Most of us kept our coats on the entire time as it was too cold to take them off. Not exactly how you want to spend the evening. And I don’t know what was going on with the smell but there was a highly offensive smell on one side of the room (like a baby’s diaper). And there weren’t any babies or kids in the restaurant.

Cypress Street Pint and Plate’s beer selection is ok, but by no means the quality of say a Taco Mac or Porter Bar, but not bad I suppose. Along with about 9 beers regularly on tap and a selection of beers by the bottle, Cypress Street also offers 5 beers on tap that change out weekly. They have a menu of these on their website, but it is not updated regularly, and neither is the food menu. Of the 5 beers that were on the list, they were out of the one and only that I and several others in the group had our eye on – the Tommyknocker Imerpial Nut Brown Ale, made with chocolate and maple syrup. I settled on the Left Hand Stout, a dark, milky beer which I’d had before. Good choice if you want something with a slightly coffee finish to it.

We started out with some appetizers – french fries, onions rings and hummus. The price is small and so are the portions. Five bucks each for both of these options. Don’t worry about filling up on these if you are in a group, it’s just not gonna happen. You are really better off saving your $ and ordering sandwiches or entrees rather than apps. Sandwiches come with your choice of a side and are plenty filling.

The food seems to be reasonable, except for their highly touted meatball sliders. These were awful! I forced myself to eat 2 but just couldn’t eat the third, it was disgusting. The description sounds so good – meatballs (how do you screw those up?), caesar dressing, arugula, parmasean cheese. The taste (which I find difficult to articulate) was terrible and at 9 bucks for 3, hardly a bargain.

Really none of the sliders are are bargain. I’ve also had the buffalo chicken sliders and although these were tasty, I just don’t feel justified the $3 a piece. It would be nice if you could mix and match as they have cod, shrimp and chicken as well, but unfortunately you must order 3 of the same for $9.

Others had burgers and sandwiches which I sampled and thought were quite good. The Philly Cheesesteak, Maytag Burger, and Chicken Picatta Sandwich were the highlights of the evening. At about $9 a piece these are a better value as the sandwiches alone offer more in terms of meat / filling than a slider and sandwiches include a side.

So, it wasn’t all bad. The service was actually pretty good. When we arrived for our 8 PM reservation and our table was all set up. They don’t take reservations unless you have 8 or more in your party. We had 10. Now, here’s one thing I have to give Cypress Street props for. Although it clearly states they don’t do separate checks for large parties, our server gladly volunteered to do that without us even having to ask. I don’t know about you, but it is a pain in the arse to separate out what your share is from a large check, especially after you’ve been drinking all night. Kudos to them for doing this.

The Burger Club, Vinings, Atlanta, GA First Impressions

The Burger Club opened in the Vinings Jubilee shopping center back in November. I wrote a simple post about its opening and since then, that post has gotten some of the top views on this blog. So, I thought I had better visit the Burger Club and see for myself what all the fuss was about.

The Burger Club Seating area

The Burger Club Seating area

So, I met up with another foodie to check it out on a recent weekday. At 11:45 the restaurant was mostly empty but just after noon, the place had filled up, with customers eager to taste their unique overpriced, abysmal burgers. And the overall feel is that the Burger Club is very kid-centric with the cartoon network on several TVs and an entire wall for kids to color on. Seems like a very awkward place to come sip on martinis in the evening as they brag about on their menu.

Our server was pleasant, cheerful and very helpful. She even made sure to put our milkshake in to go cups, since we ordered them at the end of the meal. The best thing about the Burger Club seems to be the servers, not the food or the atmosphere.

Glancing at the menu, I thought about building my own burger, but thought better of it when I noticed that with a base price of $7.50 for a basic burger, by the time I added my cheese, veggies and meat, I’d suddenly be over $9 without even a side as they are NOT included in the build your burger list. Sides are around $3.

Moving on to the Specialty burgers that do come with a side, I was tempted to play it safe and order the Gastropub burger, a regular burger with bacon, red onion marmalade and roquefort cheese. But I thought better of it and went for something out of the ordinary and ordered the Georgia burger with a fried green tomato, goat cheese and fried peaches. For my side, I could have ordered tater tots, fries, potato salad, mac and cheese or some other perennial favorites, but ultimately chose fries, which tasted just like Arby’s curly fries.

The Burger Club Georgia Burger

The Burger Club Georgia Burger

As far as high end burgers go, this one was terrible. I ordered the burger medium (slightly pink center) however once it was delivered there was no pink to be found, it was well done. And my dining companion ordered medium rare (his came out well done too). The burger was completely dried out. Even a well done burger can be somewhat juicy but this one wasn’t at all. I kept using ketchup to add moisture to the burger so I could stand to eat it.

I really wanted to find some redeeming quality in the food. So, I turned to the toppings. But truth be told, the toppings aren’t anything to get yourself worked up about either. I didn’t feel like they (goat cheese, peaches, fried green tomato) complemented each other particularly well, not to mention that most of the toppings fall out when you pick up the burger. I ended having to eat mine with a knife and fork to get a bite with all of the toppings in a mouthful. And even then it was just an extremely bland tasting burger.

At this point, I decided my spirits could be lifted with a milkshake. Out of chocolate, vanilla or peach we chose peach to share. After a couple of sips all I could taste was vanilla. I was about to flag down our server to tell her we got the wrong one when, the tiniest bit of peach landed on my taste bud. Ah, so they crush up some peach bits and throw it into a vanilla shake. Not exactly what I was expecting and I certainly didn’t think it would be halfway through my milkshake that I’d finally taste the peach. I’m just glad I didn’t pay for the leaded (with alcohol) then I really would have felt screwed by the cost.

I find that if your base (in this case it is the burger) isn’t done right then all the nice, fancy toppings in the world aren’t going to make it better, which sadly seems to be the case at the Burger Club. There are too many other places in Atlanta to go get a great burger, save your money and go elsewhere.

The Burger Club Opening Soon, Vinings, Atlanta, GA

The Burger Club, is set to open on November 4th for lunch at 11:30. Located in the heart of the Vinings in the Vinings Jubilee, it is run by the same people who own Social Vinings and Paul’s. It’s another fancy burger joint that serves creative burgers, hot dogs/homemade sausages, along with homemade condiments. Competitive Eating Reaches New Heights: 30,000 Calorie Burger

Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub in Clearfield, PA, boasts what’s probably the largest menu item in the world: The Belly Bruiser burger. It all begins with the 22 ounce bun. Then there’s the 15 pounds of ground beef, three pounds of cheese, a whole head of lettuce, 15 pickles, three tomatoes, two onions and two cups each of ketchup, mayo, mustard and relish. This 30,000 calorie burger — the burger has 30,000 calories and more than 2,000 grams of fat – more than the average person should eat in 2 weeks!

After 711 people had tried and failed to eat the entire burger, competitive eater, Brad Sciullo was able to conquer it in a mere 4 hours and 39 minutes. Sciullo was quoted as saying he considers competitive eating as an extreme sport.

Canyons Burger, Woodstock, Atlanta, GA Review

As if there aren’t enough of the fast casual burger joints in town (Five Guys, Cheeseburger Bobby’s), there’s a new player, Canyons Burger. This review is a short one as there isn’t much to say. Canyons only has 2 Atlanta locations – Buckhead and Woodstock. I visited the Canyons Woodstock location on a recent Sunday.

Canyons had a special promotion going on this Sunday. If you ordered a drink and fries you were entitled to a free burger. The free burger was your choice of a regular hamburger or cheeseburger, of which one each was sampled. Not unlike Five Guy’s or Cheeseburger Bobby’s you get to choose from a multitude of toppings – although toppings were a little more limited than Five Guys. Five Guys offers sauteed mushrooms and green peppers whereas Canyon’s does not.

Canyons was extremely busy on the Sunday when I visited. I can’t be sure if this was due to the promotion or if they were just that busy, but the line was very long. The crowd at the Woodstock location was mostly families. Now, here’s where the bottleneck happens; instead of calling out orders and handing them to customers, Canyon’s has the staff walk around looking for the matching table sign you are given when you place your order. The staff must have been a bit green as it took them quite a while to match the food with their tables. I watched as food was stacked up waiting to be delivered.

Canyons Cheeseburger with Sweet Potato Fries

Canyons Cheeseburger with Sweet Potato Fries

The burgers were cooked well and were juicy. I especially enjoyed the shoestring sweet potato fries that came with the burger. Five Guys offers great fries (fried in peanut oil) but not sweet potato fries. The regular fries, crinkle cut variety, were not bad either.

Canyons Crinkle Cut Fries

Canyons Crinkle Cut Fries

The pre-discounted total would have been around $17 or $18 for the two meals. Although I enjoyed my meal and the outdoor seating, I doubt I would return to pay that much for a burger and fries. You can get just as good a burger with a better selection of toppings for less money at Five Guys.
