Ritz Carlton, Buckhead, Atlanta, GA Holiday Brunch

As true with most cities, weekend Brunch is a pretty big deal here in Atlanta. While I do love a good brunch, this time of year I instead tend to celebrate my own form of weekend hibernation: Sleep until the sun is high, then find some eggs and bacon fried.

However, somewhere in these light shortened days, there is a special Holiday and the Ritz Carlton, Buckhead could get anyone, even Scrooge, in the Holiday spirit. The Buckhead Ritz Carlton creates a very special brunch 4 weekends during the Holiday Season, and I was invited to attend the kickoff celebration this year.

So what makes the Ritz’s Holiday brunch so special? The hotel is festively decorated for the holiday season as well musical entertainment and caroling by the Dickens Singers. Santa is even walking around to spread cheer (no, not high-end mall Santa, the real deal P’Tree Kringle) and need I mention Photo Op?

But, it’s the food that makes this such a great occasion. I arrived at noon for my reservation, and started off with coffee, fresh squeezed OJ and champagne. I don’t drink champagne too often, but this was so tasty, I had to inquire as to the brand which is called Mumm of Napa Valley. (Think Mummosa.…Mmmmm)

Ritz Carlton Buckhead Brunch Buffett

Ritz Carlton Buckhead Brunch Buffett

I like the layout of the offerings. This isn’t your traditional buffet with only 1 or 2 rows of food. This spread keeps going and going. First there’s a station where traditional omlettes and waffles are made to order, along with an offering of pancakes, bacon, sausage and breakfast potatoes. The bacon was extra crispy, but not too salty which was perfect for me. And the breakfast potatoes had onions and peppers too. I sampled a little but didn’t want to overdo it as I knew there were much more tasty treats to be had than these perennial brunch favorites.

Ritz Carlton Buffet (Bread and Cheese)

Ritz Carlton Buffet (Bread and Cheese)

Meandering through the rooms of food stations, I passed by the fresh fruit area, bread and cheese area which all looked quite tasty and made my way to the fresh seafood (oysters, crab, shrimp, caviar). Apparently, the caviar was quite popular, as diners couldn’t seem to get enough of it, but I can’t comment as I’m not much of a fan. But the crab and shrimp on the other hand, I very much enjoyed. The large portions were fresh and hit the spot. No need to feel ashamed: Servers here will never judge you on how many oyster, pincher, tail shells stack up before another fresh plate is available.

Ritz Carlton Salad/ Vegetable Buffet

Ritz Carlton Salad/ Vegetable Buffet

Next, was the salad / vegetable station. This shouldn’t be overlooked as there are many goodies to be found such as prosciutto wrapped asparagus, beet salad, and cranberry rice among many other fine offerings. I had to have 2 helpings of the beet salad as well as the sweet potato salad they were so tasty. Don’t miss the carrots either. I haven’t had carrots this good since I ate here.

Ritz Carlton Buckhead Buffet Carving Station

Ritz Carlton Buckhead Buffet Carving Station

BUT, the gold mine is the carving station. Not only is roast beef and suckling pig available, but on my visit I had Muscovy duck breast with buttnernut squash puree, salmon wellington, as well as striped bass. The beef was tender and juicy. The fish was flaky. And the duck breast was paired well with the squash and one of my favorites. This carving station does not reward just the first lucky guests, rather I noticed staff constantly bringing out new juicy cuts. So everyone, regardless if your seating time is 11:30 AM or 3:30 PM, gets the same delicious cuts throughout this brunch.

Ritz Carlton Buckhead Dessert Buffet

Ritz Carlton Buckhead Dessert Buffet

I’d be remiss in my review not to mention the dessert. I love the little dessert tastes the Ritz offers. This way you get to taste a variety of dishes. Glen’s favorites were the pistachio pudding and carrot cake, while I loved the key lime pie and mango cheesecake.

Holiday brunch is available Sundays through December 20th from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm at the Ritz Carlton, Buckhead. Cost is $58 for adults and $28 per child.

Heads up: They only validate parking for valet. The self-parking is run by an independent company. So, if you park yourself, the walk is farther, and they cannot validate the parking which is about $4 hour.

Cafe de Paris, Marietta, Atlanta, GA Restaurant Review

Located in a strip mall in East Cobb, Café de Paris is a welcome refuge from the chain restaurants and fast food establishments that are abundant along the Johnson Ferry / Roswell Rd area. I visited this quaint French restaurant on a Wednesday afternoon for lunch. Tucked away in the corner of the Woodlawn Commons shopping center, Café de Paris is attached to a European style home décor store –C’est Moi, both owned by the same people.

Upon entering, you’ll notice the blackboard stand near the front door that lists the 3 or 4 specials of the day. There’s also a display of various canned and packaged foods for sale – with things like monkey bread mix, tri-colored pasta, pancake mix, syrup and the like several of the items imported from France.

Cafe De Paris Goods

The laminated menus are located near the register where you place your order. If there is a line when you enter, go to the counter and grab one of the menus, so you can peruse it as you wait in line. Once your order is placed and paid for, grab a seat and your meal will be delivered shortly.

The menu at Café de Paris is comprised on omelets, salads, sandwiches, and quesadillas (yes, quesadillas in a French restaurant). You can also choose a half and half combo consisting of your choice of 2 of the following: soup, salad or sandwich. It appears breakfast is served all day or at least through the lunch hour.

Cafe de Paris Quiche Lorraine

Cafe de Paris Quiche Lorraine

As it had been many, many months since I had had quiche, I ordered the quiche of the day- Quiche Lorraine and the soup of the day – Lobster Bisque. We also sampled the chicken salad sandwich melt. My cohorts and I were starved (we had skipped breakfast) and I was a bit concerned that the quiche Lorraine and the chicken salad melt weren’t going to sustain us for very long, but I remained satisfied well into the evening hours.

In my experience, true French food tends to be very rich but served in small portions, so the diner doesn’t feel gluttonous, and Café de Paris was no exception. My cup of soup and the small piece of quiche was served with a side of fruit, a welcome change from the normal carb fest at most other lunch spots.

Cafe de Paris Chicken Salad Sandwich Melt

Cafe de Paris Chicken Salad Sandwich Melt

My Quiche Lorraine was decent and had a fair offering of ingredients – ham, spinach and swiss cheese. But sandwiches are the real winner here. I sampled the chicken salad melt and it was divine. I’m a chicken salad addict myself, but the melt, served on thick toasted slightly sweet wheat bread was excellent. It had a slight lemon flavoring in it as well, which added another dimension of flavor.

I had the chance to sample all three of the featured soups that day: Lobster Bisque (which came with my meal), Tomato Basil and Lemon Artichoke. I felt the bisque was decent but a tad too sweet and creamy. I prefer my bisque to be a little more spicy as opposed to sweet.

“The Lemon Artichoke soup is what we are known for”, which the owner / manager, Jim (I only caught his first name) proudly extolled as he set the soup in front of me. It is definitely a bold flavor. It was not like anything I’d ever tasted before.

Cafe de Paris Lemon Artichoke Soup

Cafe de Paris Lemon Artichoke Soup

And, to be honest, on the first sip, I didn’t care for it, as both the lemon and artichoke flavor is extremely strong, but it actually grew on me and I was loving it by the end. While in line, I heard 2 customers talking about it as well with polar opposite opinions, so it appears to be one of those dishes you either love or hate.

Café de Paris is open from 8 am until 9 pm every day but Sunday, when they close at 3 pm. The café also has dinner entrees like Steak au Poivre, Lamb Chops with Mint Pesto and Shrimp Carbonara all priced at under $14. Lunches are around $8.

Service was pleasant and quick. The majority of customers look like soccer moms out to lunch with their girlfriends, in between shopping and errand running. Although the atmosphere lends itself to the Parisian-style long, leisurely lunch, with the quick service it is possible to get in and out within your lunch hour. So, if you work in area, Café de Paris should be on your short list of lunch spots, a definite escape from the ordinary.

West Egg Cafe, West End, Midtown, Atlanta, GA Restaurant Review

I don’t eat out for breakfast or brunch often. I’d love to, but there aren’t many good spots for that OTP, where I live, so with my unemployment lingering, I’m making the best of my free time and having more breakfast / lunches out as my budget allows.

West Egg Cafe Dining Area

West Egg Cafe Dining Area

So, I met a friend for lunch recently at West Egg Cafe in Midtown. Is it me, or is it weird parking in the parking deck to go into such a hippie kind of place? It seems like West Egg might be too granola for its posh surroundings. Or is that just a front? Portions were small and prices were high – $2.25 for a single cupcake?

West Egg Fried Green Tomato, Bacon, Egg and Cheese Wrap

West Egg Fried Green Tomato, Bacon, Egg and Cheese Wrap

I thought I’d go with something quasi-breakfast as it was already 11:30 in the am. So I chose the Fried Green Tomato BLT wrap. This is FGT, bacon, cheddar cheese, and eggs in a wheat wrap with horseradish dill sauce. It comes with your choice of garlic grits or new potatoes. New potatoes for me.

West Egg Cafe Egg Salad Sandwich

West Egg Cafe Egg Salad Sandwich

My friend had the Egg Salad sandwich with bacon. And I think she got the better item. When I got my plate the potatoes were lukewarm – not hot as they should have been. And the wrap – well, I just think there was to much going on. The horseradish dill sauce detracted from it rather than helped it. It was too overpowering. As the wrap was cut in half, by the time I got to the second half I unwrapped it, and slid out the contents and brushed off as much of the sauce as I could. I also didn’t care for the wheat wrap, which was like eating cardboard.

West Egg Cafe Milky Way Latte

West Egg Cafe Milky Way Latte

The coffee was ok, but it is like visiting Starbucks. You know you are going to pay too much for the coffee but you do it anyway.

As I had heard good things about the cupcakes, I decided to try 2 of those. I had my heart set on red velvet but they were already sold out. So, I got the chocolate with cream cheese filling and the hummingbird which is like a carrot cake cupcake. It had a cream cheese frosting with pineapple, walnuts and bananas inside. I gave the chocolate one to Glen which he said was very tasty and we then shared the hummingbird one. If you want a little something sweet without going overboard, this is a great option.

I’d like to venture back to try one of their sandwiches for myself, but not in much of a hurry to do so.

Brunch at Pacci Ristorante, Midtown, Atlanta, GA

Pacci Ristorante Menus

Pacci Ristorante Menus

A couple weeks ago I had brunch at Pacci Ristorante which is located in the Palomar Hotel in Midtown. Full disclosure: I was invited to join some of the staff there along with some other bloggers for a brunch at Pacci. Upon entering, we were greeted by Emily and Alexis, our hostesses for the afternoon at Pacci.

Pacci Dining Room

Pacci Dining Room

Our festivities began with a Bloody Mary, as most good brunches do. And this was a damn good Bloody Mary with thoughtful details like a funky colored grape tomato and a pickle wrapped in a salami. You’re not likely to find these at those other bottomless bloody mary brunch joints.

Pacci Bloddy Mary

Pacci Bloddy Mary

Pacci currently has a special going on through remainder of August. If you order off their Scramble Gamble menu, they’ll flip you for the bill. If lady luck is on your side, you are in for a free brunch. This deal is per person, NOT per table. This menu is made up of eggs, pancakes, frittatas and the like – most of the dishes are meat free and range in price from $8 to $12.

A couple days before the brunch, I tried to view the menu online, but it still isn’t up. So, while I have a copy of the Scramble Gamble menu, I’ll do my best to describe the remaining elements of their regular brunch / lunch menu at Pacci.

Pacci Crab Benedict

Pacci Crab Benedict

Their brunch menu consists of the usual suspects, pancakes, omelettes, steak and eggs as well a mix of salads and entrees that are suitable for someone just wanting lunch. I honed in on the Wagyu Steak and Eggs right away. And, ordinarily Glen would order something different in order for us to sample different dishes, but it just sounded so good he went for it too. Now, some of the other guests ordered the crab benedict and the burger, but the Wagyu was by far the most popular dish on this Saturday afternoon.

Pacci Burger

Pacci Burger

Never having heard of Wagyu beef before I had to do some research on this beef. Turns out is somewhat similar to Kobe beef. It is an incredibly succulent meat with intense marbling. Wagyu steak comes from Wagyu cattle from Japan. In fact, the word Wagyu is derived from two words: “wa” meaning Japanese, and “gyu” meaning cattle. Similar to Kobe cattle, Wagyu live an extremely pampered life. The main difference is the Kobe cattle are distinctly from the Kobe region in Japan whereas Wagyu can be raised anywhere. Still hungry for more info on Wagyu, find it here.

Pacci Wagyu Steak and Eggs

Pacci Wagyu Steak and Eggs

The Wagyu meal comes with eggs, toast and salad. I would have preferred hash browns instead of toast, but I didn’t even touch my toast, so I guess that is really a moot point. So, how was the Wagyu? It was simply delicious. Cooked perfectly, the pesto sauce drizzled above it was superb.

It was so delicious, I nearly forgot there were eggs with my meal. Well, that and the fact that the eggs were hiding under my toast. I really dig the rectangular plates at Pacci, but I just wish mine had been a bit larger so as not to have to stack the items. I know it is a small thing, but still worth mentioning. Even the small salad that came with my meal was tasty. What I still can’t figure out is, given how much Wagyu costs, how they can charge so little for this meal? The entree cost was somewhere between $15 and $18.

Pacci Gnocchi

Pacci Gnocchi

Our hostesses wanted for us to try some other regular dishes like the bolognese and gnocchi. While I loved the bolognese, I think the gnocchi would have been better without the cheese on it. There seemed to be a sage sauce on the gnocchi which gave it a slightly sweet flavor which would have been fine on its own, the cheese detracted from it, in my opinion.

Of course, we couldn’t leave without dessert. Our gracious hostesses, Emily and Alexis ordered one each of the desserts for us to sample. Again not having a menu as a cheat sheet, I cannot remember the exact names of the desserts, but I know we sampled a chocolate cake (Emily’s favorite), a peach bread pudding, and a dessert trio consisting of a mini tiramisu and a couple other tasty tiramisu-esque sweets (my favorite).

Pacci Dessert Trio

Pacci Dessert Trio

As an aside, the coffee was excellent. This may seem like a small detail, but to me, coffee is an important part of the meal, especially when that meal is brunch. And the meal itself was very robust and filling. It really stuck to my ribs – didn’t eat dinner until 10 PM that night.

Hotel Palomar\'s Alto Rex Lounge

Hotel Palomar's Alto Rex Lounge

We also visited Alto Rex, the upstairs lounge overlooking the streets of Midtown. It was pretty, but I feel certain it must be experienced during the evening to be fully appreciated. I definitely plan on a return visit, for both dinner and the nighttime Alto Rex experience. I hear they serve munchies at Alto Rex for those not wanting to indulge in a full meal.

Whistle Stop Cafe, Kennesaw, Atlanta, GA Restaurant Review

I never thought of trying the Whistle Stop Cafe until I saw a coupon for it in my local coupon book. The Whistle Stop Cafe is a quirky little restaurant tucked away in an old building in Main Street Kennesaw. Perhaps I had a block against the Whistle Stop as it is located right next to a store that is owned by a man who is a self-proclaimed white supremacist. I’ve now been to the Whistle Stop Cafe 3 times and never had any negative experiences.

My first visit was with my co-worker Linda, who couldn’t stop raving about how good it was. She insisted that we go to lunch at 11:30 am as the Whistle Stop gets REALLY crowded. Boy was she right. About 10 minutes after we arrived the Whistle Stop, there was a line out the door of people waiting for a table. The place isn’t that big – probably only 15 tables in the restaurant. Since that first visit, I’ve gone and even with a short wait, we were in and out in about 50 minutes.

This is definitely a meat and three place. My first time, I went for the meatloaf. Truth be told, the sides are much more of a tough decision than the meat. That time I opted for fried okra and sweet potato fries. The okra was good, but not exceptional. The sweet potato fries were fantastic – really crispy and really flavorful. Oh yeah, I enjoyed the meatloaf too – very juicy. I really wanted to try the fried chicken but I thought 2 fried items were plenty in one meal.

Whistle Stop Meatloaf, Fried Okra, and Sweet Potato Fries

Whistle Stop Meatloaf, Fried Okra, and Sweet Potato Fries

All meals come with your choice of biscuit or cornbread. I’m usually a cornbread girl rather than a biscuit girl, but to me, the biscuits are the clear winner here. I like my cornbread slightly sweet and this is not how it comes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. This isn’t much of an issue as the portions are so generous, you only will have about 1 or 2 bites of your biscuit or cornbread.

Ok, so visit #2:
I opted for the country fried steak, after our watiresses politely steered me away from the country fried chicken. Sides were mashed potatoes and fried green tomatoes. I was good – I didn’t go for all 3 items being fried. Out of the 3 meals I had there, this was my least favorite, although still good. The steak tasted too salty and the mashed potatoes were just blah. Now, the fried green tomatoes (3 huge ones) were ok, but I’m just used to having some sort of sauce or cheese with them and they just tasted like something was missing without any sort of sauce.

Whistle Stop Country Fried Steak, Mashed Potatoes, Fried Green Tomatoes

Visit #3:
I just couldn’t resist having the fried chicken any longer. I had to go for it. I like dark meat and my order came with a leg and a thigh as you would suspect. I was licking my fingers in no time. For my sides? Cucumber salad and yam patties. Now the cucumber salad was good, but it’s kind a hard to mess that up – its just cucumbers, onions and tomatoes (although mine only had one small speck of a tomato in it) with some italian dressing. Yam patties were ok but I would have preferred a full sweet potato with cinnamon and butter on it.

Whistle Stop Fried Chicken, Yam Patties and Cucumber Salad

I have now been there with several co-workers who absolutely rave about the collard greens. They tell me they are some of the best they’ve ever had. I just don’t care for collard greens at all. But if you are fan, give them a try at the Whistle Stop Cafe.

Whistle Stop Collard Greens

Whistle Stop Collard Greens

My only issue with the sides here is that they vary in portion so much. For example, the fries, mashed potatoes and fried green tomatoes were a huge portion, but items like the okra, cucumber salad and yams were much smaller. They put them in small bowls, so you need to be aware of that when ordering.

Prices are so reasonable at $6.25 for all this food. And, you can also choose to get all veggies if you want and the price is under $5.00. Waitresses have always been super friendly and it is obvious that they have regulars who absolutely adore them.

Extras: They serve breakfast as well, at reasonable prices.

Denny’s Grand Slam Promotion

Back on February 3rd, Denny’s restaurants gave away 2 million Grand Slam breakfasts. Customers lined up and the parking lots were packed with people ready to take advantage of this great offer. But that isn’t the end of it. Denny’s is back with a new promotion – This Wednesday, April 8th, Denny’s is giving away a Grand Slamwich when you buy one.

The title of the Denny’s promotion is “Pass Along Grand Slam Kindness”. Off is good from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, only. You can get a free Grand Slamwich for a friend when you order a Grand Slam for yourself.

Denny's Grand Slamwich

Denny's Grand Slamwich

So what exactly is The Grand Slamwich? The Grand Slamwich is made of scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, shaved ham, mayonnaise and cheese grilled on potato bread with a maple spiced spread. It is also serviced with a side of hash browns. Costs vary by location but it is priced between $4.99 and $6.99.

I read some comments criticizing Denny’s for doing this “just to get people to spend more money” but c’mon. It is nice to see restaurants using their marketing dollars to help consumers by offering these deals instead of using them for ads.
