Yum Bunz is the new venture of Miso Izakaya’s Guy Wong. The menu is simple featuring bowls, dumplings and of course, buns. They pride themselves on being a healthy choice, with steamed, not fried items and naturally raised meats. All buns or “baos” are less than 180 calories each. Located on the Westside, there is plenty of free parking on the street and in the nearby parking deck.
The place is bright and modern looking with loud music. There are booths along the wall, perfect for two and large picnic like tables along the middle of the restaurant, good for groups. You order at the counter and the food is brought out lightning fast. My food was sitting at my table by the time I got back to it with my drink. Staff is super friendly saying hello and thank you and managers walk around making sure everything is prepared to your liking.
The buns or “bunz” as they are called here, are $1.59 each, or make it a combo which includes two buns and a side for $6.29. The sides are listed on the chalkboard each day and seem to be a choice of different salads: kale, cucumber and maybe a papaya beef jerky. It is surprising that the side is nearly as much as two baos.
I ordered two buns and a kale salad. The chicken curry and Mongolian BBQ were both good, but for all the ingredients listed, the flavor was not as much of a wow factor as I was expecting. And I tasted no heat from the Mongolian BBQ though it is denoted as spicy on the menu. The kale salad was delicious and had a sweet peanut dressing that made me wolf it down before making a dent in one bun.
I enjoyed my meal and left satisfied but two hours later I was hungry again. While it may be great for those looking for a low cal option, if you are wanting to feel fully satisfied, you’ll probably need to order a couple more buns.
