I love that so many restaurants are getting into the brunch business. It is refreshing to walk into a restaurant, not having made brunch reservations in advance and not be faced with an hour + wait. Having been to STG Trattoria for dinner, and liking it very much, I was anxious to see how their brunch service would be. I was recently invited to try STG’s new brunch offerings.
A strong and spicy Bloody Mary was the perfect start to Brunch! Quite tasty, I knew I had to stop myself from ordering a second one as I would have been quite loopy leaving the restaurant.
The Duck Hash was probably the best thing I sampled. However, it was lacking the main ingredient – duck. I had a a couple several nice juicy pieces in the first few bites, but after that it was just potatoes and egg. I guess it was a good thing me and my guest treated this dish as our appetizer, making quick work of gobbling up the duck.
The Eggs Benedict pizza was delicious! With gooey egg, prosciutto, pancetta and arugula (a few of my favorite things!) it was divine. At six large slices it was also very huge. I’d totally recommend getting this and a side or the duck hash as your starter and splitting with your brunch cohorts.
Reading the menu prior to my visit, I was anxious to try the shrimp and calamari with polenta. I ordered a different drink, the Mimoso, made with Aperol and grapefruit juice as well (pictured with the entree). The entree was decent but the shrimp lacked flavor and I thought the polenta was a bit creamy. It was more like a shrimp ‘n grits consistency. Still good, just not exactly what I was expecting.
Not to miss out on dessert our server recommended the zucchini bread. A bit unconventional for dessert as it is an entree, but it was the perfect dessert for us. It is served with marscapone and syrup along with a hefty portion of candied pancetta. I’m very much a believer that everything is better with bacon. But this dish, with pieces of pancetta, wasn’t. Perhaps it because I was ready for something sweet, but I thought it overpowered the zucchini and marscapone flavor, which were quite wonderful on their own.
Service was spot on the entire time. STG just needs to beef up some of the portions and a couple other things as mentioned above and they’ll be a fantastic addition to brunch in Atlanta.
