Tin Can Fish House and Oyster Bar, located in City Walk in Sandy Springs, has replaced the now defunct Teela Italiano, although ownership remains the same. Tin Can and its next door neighbor, Teela Taqueria, are both owned by brother and sister team Nik Panagopoulos and Arte Antoniades. After shutting for a minimal amount of time, the space has been totally revamped to take on the fish shack kind of look. I was invited to attend the media preview of Tin Can Fish House last month. The always amazing Caleb Spivak, @whatnowatlanta and I were joined by two of my peeps for a seafood feast.
Looking around Tin Can Fish House, I recalled past visits to Florida with its waterfront cafes. If the decor doesn’t make you feel like you just stepped off the boardwalk, the food sure will. We kicked things off with some oysters, Thai mussels, calamari and my favorite, Bang Bang Shrimp. The general consensus was that the oysters, (we sampled both raw and fried), were so-so, which was slightly disappointing as it does have the word Oyster in the name. The mussels with the cilantro-curry-coconut flavor were a crowd-pleaser and the Bang Bang shrimp, which I’ve had in taco form at Teela Taqueria next door, was also a delicious start to our meal. My only regret is that we didn’t order the Ahi Tuna. After talking to several other diners that evening it seemed to be the most-liked appetizer.
Tin Can Fish House has Po Boys, all priced at $9, should you stop in for lunch or want something light, but we were complete gluttons each ordering a fish entree (choices are Mahi-Mahi, Tilapia, Grouper, Cat Fish, Cod, Salmon) which came with two sides plus an additional 1/2 pound of prawns for the table.
We had a fair sampling of the fish, all prepared perfectly, of which the blackened grouper (pictured below left) was the most tasty with my Mahi-Mahi (below right) a very close second. Of course, you have your choice of fish preparation. While I highly recommend the blackened route, there’s also the sweet chili glaze, Horseradish crusted and the always popular fried. We were all in agreement that mains were much better than starters.
Being as two of our appetizers and a couple sides we ordered were fried, it was probably a wise decision for us to NOT have our fish fried as well. The fried green tomatoes I ordered were pretty bland, but the okra and sweet potato tots were quite tasty. Prices are very reasonable at Tin Can Fish House with sandwiches only $9 and entrees around $13. Stop in and check out them out soon.
