Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve no doubt heard of the King of Pops. Laid off office worker Steven Carse started making his fresh fruit popsicles as a way to make a living. He started selling them out of a cart in the Virginia Highland area. Since then, King of Pops has garnered a tremendous following.
My first taste of King of Pops was at the Irwin Street Market. Skeptical about just how good these $2.50 a pop popsicles could be, I bought just one, Grapefruit Mint. After one lick, I was on the hook. Since then I’ve tried Chocolate Sea Salt, Blackberry Mojito, Canteloupe, GA Peach, Banana Cinnamon, Orange Basil and Blueberry Lemongrass. The nice thing about these popsicles, besides the fact that they contain very fresh ingredients, is that they aren’t overly sweet like store bought ones. Can’t wait to try Pear Cardamom and Mexican Chocolate.
The mojito flavor is orgasmic and I think anything with the mint flavor can’t miss. Right now I’ve got a Grapefruit Hibiscus in my freezer, calling my name. King of Pop’s usual spot is at the corner of North Highland and North Avenue. But he changes things up and is expanding to other areas – even (gasp!) Cobb Country. Yep, you can find King of Pops at the Marietta Farmer’s market on Saturday mornings. I most recently had some on the Westside at the Antico Pizza block party last Friday.
