Por Fin, which means “At Last” is a new upscale Mexican restaurant which opened earlier this month, is in the up and coming Johns Creek, GA area. Por Fin reached out to me and asked me to check them out, which I gladly did this past Saturday evening.

Glen chose the Authentic Margarita, made with Agave Tequila, and was very pleased with it himself. And, if you are really into Tequila, Por Fin also offers what they call a “Make it my Way Margarita.” It comes with your choice of tequila (choose from 15 high end tequilas) for only $10. This is unique idea – one I’ve not seen anywhere else in Atlanta.

I was in the mood for Tequila. So, I sampled the Nancy Rita – a concoction which, Nancy Pingitore, Por Fin’s owner came up with herself which consists of (in addition to tequila) berries, Orange Liqueur, lime juice and soda. A depature from the typical margarita, but a drink I enjoyed it quite well.

Beer is available by the bottle only, but at reasonable prices. I was glad to see a good offering – Sierra Nevada, Sweetwater 420 and Yuengling are all $3.50 or under and for a bit more you can get Stella, Red Stripe or St. Paulie Girl. I also like that the wine selections are all available by the glass or bottle.

To start, I ordered the guacamole, ceviche and mussels appetizer. While the guacamole was fresh tasting, I think it could have used a little more salt. I did enjoy the ceviche, consisting of shrimp, scallops and calamari, and it is a huge portion! It is more than I’ve ever had in a serving of ceviche, and would be great to share with a group of 4 or more. Por Fin has 2 kinds of ceviche (the other being a salmon) and you can get a duo of them if you’d like to try both for just a couple bucks more.

The mussels were also another winner that evening. I loved the broth which has a touch of cream but also is made with tequila. It is pretty spicy – just what I wanted and with lots of crusty bread for dipping. Normally, I would have skipped the soup, but the chicken and garabanzo bean soup just sounded too good, so I sampled that as well. At only $3.95 it is a large bowl, very filling and healthy. This is a great choice and one of the best dishes I tasted. When you visit, please don’t miss this one.

Por Fin offers tacos, tamales, enchiladas and burritos, but we wanted to sample some of their “creative plates” And just as a side note, you can mix and match tacos (i.e. one shrimp, one steak, one chicken) many of which come with what is called “metamorphosis salsa,” a salsa mixed with blueberries and mangoes with a bit of heat to it. They also offer “wet burritos” which are stuffed with all the regular fixings inside – rice, beans, queso and salsa, the only difference is that in these burritos the meat sits on top.

Whenever I am fortunate enough to meet with the proprietors of restaurants, I always ask for their opinion on what to try. So, after taking Nancy’s advice on starters, and being pleased I once again asked for recommendation on dinner.

She touted the Marjoram and tomato braised beef Short Ribs and the fish of which there were 2 kinds – a blue corn crusted Grouper and Yucatan style wrapped in a corn husk. Glen ordered the Yucatan fish (Corvina that evening).

My short ribs were tasty and had a sweet with heat twinge to them. I did combine some meat with the charro beans and cilantro rice in the flour tortilla, which I quite enjoyed. Glen enjoyed his Corvina fish as well, which was light and flavored with an adobo sauce.

I really love the fresh taste of everything. Nancy said she deliberately planned the menu around more traditional Mexican food rather than offering a bunch of dishes smothered in cheese. The decor was thoughtfully planned as well with burlap and silk curtains, stamped floor and bar made of high polished sandstone. And, while everything was high in quality, it wasn’t high in price. Appetizers were under $10 and all entrees were under $20.
