Tasty Food, Top Notch Service, and Beautiful Atmosphere.
Mitra is one of the many restaurants off of Juniper and in Midtown that is a converted house. It is beautiful and full of bold colors inside. The lighting fixtures in Mitra are truly one of a kind and definitely add to the ambiance of the restaurant. As you walk up the front entrance, there is a beautiful water fountain cascading over the Mitra sign. Once inside, Mitra does well with the space it has. Tables are set to make the most of the space, without customers feeling crowded.
On the recent Friday night when I visited Mitra, it was pretty crowded when we arrived at 830 but by the time we were leaving the place had pretty much died down. Service was very friendly and efficient. Our server (besides being eye candy) was very knowledgeable not only about the menu but the wine selection. We opted for a bottle as there is not a huge selection of wines by the glass, and were very pleased with his recommendation.
Having eaten at Mitra once before, I knew we were in for a treat. We started with the calamari, which I remembered having last time and loving every bite. I was tempted to stray from the calamari to the beef chuzos (beef skewers with pomegranite sauce) but just couldn’t bring myself to do it. It is some of the best calamari I’ve ever had. My guess is they use a lighter batter like tempura to fry the calamari. It comes in a cone shaped container with chop sticks. Some spicy aioli is dripped over it as well as cilantro. It is the perfect flavor.
Last visit, Glen and I ordered a couple appetizers and shared the special – Sea Bass. The moment we had our first taste we wished we had each gotten an entree of our own. This time at Mitra, I had the jalepeno lime scallops and Glen had the pulled pork. My scallops were cooked perfectly and the jalepeno sauce was enough to feel some heat but not overwhelming. Glen enjoyed his pork entree, but we both thought the potatoes were a bit bland. I know I’m not a chef but I think adding magoes in place of the potatoes would be an awesome flavor combination. Just a suggestion
The atmosphere is perfect for a date, probably not a good place for a group. I plan on going back to sample some more appetizers. I hear that they have a happy hour that includes drinks and appetizers for $5 each. But I didn’t see any mention of this on their website.
