Old Mill – Acworth, GA, Restaurant Review

What a beautiful job they did in restoring this Old Mill. I’m thrilled that the Old Mill was saved instead of just being torn down and replaced with something else. And it truly is a beautiful building inside and out. Great venue for a Christmas party as well. My office had our Christmas party at the Old Mill in Acworth over the weekend and the food was terrific.

We have a small group so it was not a problem fitting us in – this is a pretty small restaurant. So, if your group is larger than 20 you might want to consider going somewhere else. Also, the bar at the Old Mill is quite small – it will only seat about 6 or 8 people – good thing we didn’t have any big drinkers in our group ;-)

As I wear the event coordinator hat at my job as well as many other hats, I had my pick of restaurants and choose the Old Mill, mostly because of the cool look of the place, but the menu looked good too. It is also in close proximity to where everyone in the office lives.

Everyone pretty much arrived at the same time and I could not believe how many cars were in the parking lot considering the size of the restaurant. The valet was overwhelmed to say the least. Once we got inside we were taken to out semi-private room.

As I said, the food at the Historic Old Mill was great. Mostly everyone had the New York Strip Steak which was a huge portion and cooked to perfection – marinated in pineapple, soy sauce, etc, etc it was amazing. The appetizers I choose, calamari and crab cakes with fried green tomatoes were quite tasty too.

The service, however, needs a little polishing. A couple things disappointed me. First, if you are going to offer private events then you need to have the staff to accomodate those parties. Most of us ordered drinks upon sitting down and had to wait and wait forever for them. Some even had to ask a couple times because it was forgotten. Two people ordered margaritas but were told they don’t have limes so they were given lemons in their place. What!!??

As far as the pace of the food, it was somewhat slow starting out but seemed to catch up as the evening went on. I had told the even planner I wanted to appetizers to come out shortly after everyone was seated. Instead it was about 20 – 30 minutes. I could have overlooked this if they were better about getting our drinks out.

Everything continued to flow smoothly until dessert. The Red Velvet cake (which was delicious by the way- better than Chops in Buckhead) was brought out but no coffee was served for well after our plates were cleaned.

One of my biggest pet peeves when dining out is that I want to have wine with my dinner and coffee with my dessert, not after, DURING. I think good servers understand this. Some may say that I’m being too harsh, but given the fact that appetizers were pre-selected and sides and dessert were the same for everyone, I don’t think it is too much to ask to get drinks out on time, especially given the amount of money we spent there.

On a side note, it is interesting to note that the house wines are some of the most expensive on the menu. I had started off with a Chilean Pinot Noir but it was so horrendous I switched to the house Cabernet which went well with my Steak.

Bottom line – the food was good. I would dine here again, so long as it is a small group.
